A Follow-Up Message from our CEO

I just wanted to take a moment and provide you with an update and thank you for the positive feedback.  It's important to hear we are moving in the right direct.  Several great suggestions regarding new features and functionality have been received and are currently under review.   Soon, we’ll start sharing some of your ideas to solicit feedback.

A lot of the feedback we’ve received so far has been concerning Ning 2.0.  We know some of you have made significant investments in customizing your 2.0 networks.  Despite our intent to restart the migration process from 2.0 to 3.0, we won’t be forcing anyone to migrate at this time.  We’re still retooling the process and will make an announcement with more information here when it’s ready to go.

In support news, we’ll complete the transition moving our support back in-house this week.  We’re working diligently to reevaluate our internal policies and procedures to streamline the support experience.  This will take time, but it’s a top priority.

Please keep the feedback coming.  We need to hear the good, the bad and the ugly. As I said previously, I don’t consider you customers but partners, and I look forward to a prosperous partnership!

  • I have a request I would like to share:
    On ning 3.0 I am short on space and would need a way to limit size upload from my members. Plus it would be great to have a tool to find and delete big files. Many of my members have uploaded big photos..... Thanks!

  • Very much appreciate the communication and message.

    One thing I'd like changed and which shouldn't be difficult - for public networks, make it so that users need to register if they download our files. That is standard protocol on all communities I know - register to both post/reply and download.  Right now, for an open community, members can download all files without registering or participating on the community. This would help one creators complaint above - so many non participating members.

  • Hi I realize I am just a beginner at this, and not very versed in all that is going on.  It's OK, I get it.   I was with NING for years, back when t was virtually free and then went to 2.0 and so on...   I was hospitalized for awhile and had no access to the site and it went dormant. A small community of around 150 members, but all was lost.  Gone, vanished.  So now am trying to rebuild with 3,0...  What the heck happened?  Where is everything?  How in the world could anyone think that 3;0 is better?  With such a major loss of functionality, and features... where's the chat?  Where's the music player and the apps?  This may seem trivial to you professionals, but our members loved them. Now I can't even find a way to limit the number of items in the activity feed and my home pate is 3 ft. long....  what's going on?   I look for help in the help section and all the info is for old platforms....I always loved NING and stayed with it but now don't even recognize it anymore.   What am I missing here?  Where is the "better?"  I see it as getting more expensive, with less to choose from, and way slower support.  Am I the only one?

    • Jesse, I still have 2.0 and wouldn't switch to 3.0 on a bet, as videos are a big part of putting together game pieces for my gaming site. I switched to 3 for about a minute and a half before the new owners rescued the platform and there is nothing at all better about 3.0. It may be easier to handle from a maintenance point of view, but it is limiting everywhere I could see.  If you haven't invested too much time in your rebuild process, I'd find a way to start over with 2.0 as 3.0 is a downgrade.

      • That would be great, but how?

        • Jesse if you need a 2.0 for the video upload capabilities, you would have to open a new forum post here saying that you'''re interested in taking over a 2.0 site...............and see if anyone responds.  idk if it'll cost you or be free  You'll have to wait and see.

          fwiw I was one of the first 3.0 'testers" and I absolutely love it but it definitely takes time to become used to.  It all depends on what you need.  If you need Events, chat, paid access and video upload, 2.0 is your friend.  3.0 will be built out this year with these missing components (it sounds like) but video upload will not be part of it from what I can gather.

          So it comes down to what do you need.  Every site is different.  Good luck!

          • Thanks!  I'll make it work! I'm not altogether unhappy with3.0 just there is still  so much missing with it.  Like... I want a sub title under the site name.  We used to have that option. I can't find it now.  etc....  Anyway  I'm learning and happy for everyone's help.  Maybe someday I can help someone else.  Thanks

            • Hi Jesse, as Kos said there are many things possible with 3.0 as it's so easy to add css or custom code to get what you need. Normally I would not post into a post such as this from the CEO as it's not really the place to add any tips, post a question into the main forum such as this and we can concentrate just on your question to help. Anyway as an example for a sub heading here is one way to do that.

              /* Header Sub Title */
              .header-siteName:after{content:"This is Bizz's Demo Site, Member Site Coming Soon";display:block;font-size:16px; padding:5px 0px 20px}

              The content ( part in bold ) is the title I am adding and the font-size sets the size I want for the text. The padding is just to give some room to it. This short line can just be added to the design studio custom css. You can see an example here: http://bizzssite.ning.com/ as how it looks. Of course we could get a lot snazzier with it with some extra code. Or we could add a little module to make it easier to add text rather than editing the code each time you want to change it. For instance I have added in the content above Member Site Coming Soon, so once ready I could easily change the text in the module to read Member Site Open To Join Here ( add link to it ).

              Interesting question Jesse as it might make a good tip to write up for anyone else who wants to do something like this. Will see what I can come up with and post into the forum.

              Hope that helps in some way

              John :-)

            • Yeah, the site description is another item the old Ning never got around to building before they went up for sale.  Hopefully the NEW owner will see that it's added.

              In the meantime, make a list of what you can't find (or need) and post a list in the forums.  We'll all lend a hand!   So many things can be accomplished with CSS.  I bet you'll get a better design than you hoped for.

    • Jesse yeah, Ning never finished building out 3.0 before they laid everyone off and went up for sale.  Luckily the new owners have committed to completing 3.0 and releasing new issues this year so hang in there if you can.  Most of us are using CometChat for Chat.  It's integrated so you members appear but it's not free unfortunately.  Ning says Chat will be released within two months.  My fingers are crossed at this point.

      Ning never finished clearing up their archives when they announced the layoffs.  Sadly it's difficult finding what you need but keep searching.  The 3.0 Help Center is a good starting point with the drop down areas.  Search if you can't find help there.

      As far as limited the # of items in the activity feed, you should be able to do that where you set it up.   Go back and check it in Site Builder
