Changes to Ning 3.0 Based on Your Feedback

We launched Ning 3.0 just over two weeks ago. While the overall market response has been really awesome, we have – based on the feedback here on Creators – somewhat underestimated the confusion and potential pain this new generation platform could create for some of you.

We value and carefully consider your input, and have decided to offer more flexibility and appreciation for you all as existing Ning customers.

Grandfathered in at 2x Member Limits

Rather than differentiate plans by features, storage and bandwidth, we set member limits for each plan. Number of members is a visible and intuitive measure of Network Creator success. We believe that you deserve a break when the time comes to upgrade. Therefore, existing Ning Networks will be grandfathered in at 2x the member limit of the new plans.

When you upgrade from Ning 2.0 to Ning 3.0, the Basic plan will support 2,000 members and the Performance plan will support 20,000 members. According to our data, this means that less than 1% of all our existing customers should see any price increase.

3-Month Post Upgrade Grace Period

We have also decided to give you an extra three more months after you upgrade before applying any member limits. And we will provide you with tools during and after the upgrade process to remove long-time inactive members from your network and clean house.

Limitless Moderators

Several of you voiced concerns with limiting the number of moderators. Recruiting active members to help moderate is a powerful tool for NCs to effectively manage their community and reward their most engaged members. We agree and we will be changing our pricing plans to reflect this. All Ning 3.0 subscribers can have an unlimited number of moderators (capped by your members plan limit). Moderators can be given full moderation privileges (approve, feature, edit, delete or suspend) for multiple features, content type and/or members. However the Ning 3.0 plans include a limitation on the number of Administrators—those with full access to the design, layout and settings of your network— Administrators will be limited to 2, 5 and 10 respectively.

'Powered by Ning | Mode Social' Footer Requirement

As we have shared in our FAQs and in several discussion topics, displaying "Powered by Ning | Mode Social" in network footers is important for the health of our business.  While we recognize that some of you will decide to leave the platform on account of it, we will not waive this requirement. However to mitigate the impact for some of you, we do intend to put an affiliate program in place that will allow you to gain some value for clickthroughs and referrals. We’ll also provide more flexibility in terms of where and how to display the logo (options such as centering it).

Ning 2.0 Upgrade, Migration and Retirement Timeline

As we have announced, we are working on a seamless upgrade process for Ning 2.0 Networks and plan to release it this summer. Once the upgrade process is available, Ning 2.0 Networks will have at least one year to move to Ning 3.0. We will confirm the exact schedule for the Ning 2.0 retirement when we officially release these migration tools. Before we officially release these tools, we are planning to work with many of you on a beta program for this key feature to make sure that it works as well as can be expected and minimize all changes and concerns for the vast majority of our existing customers.

We hope these changes address most of your concerns and give you a bit more confidence in our own ability to listen to you all. We appreciate the time and energy you pour into your communities, and are committed to delivering you a great and viable platform for years to come.

Thank you all for your feedback; we couldn’t do this without you. If you haven’t already, please take advantage of our offer to create a Ning 3.0 Sandbox Network. We would love for you to experience the redesign firsthand and get a jump-start on developing your Ning 3.0 Network. Don't forget to drop by and let us know how it's going!

            • Ok, well just to be clear so people don't panic then:

There is currently NO date given by Ning as any 'deadline' for customers to migrate their networks from 2.0 to 3.0.

Initially, Ning told us that they planned to have Ning 3.0 finished by Summer 2013, and that we'd all be given a whole year after that to migrate.  But we've not seen or heard much at all since then really, and one and a half years after its launch 3.0 is still a long way from being a complete platform.  So, there is NO current migration date being put out by Ning.

Current 2.0 customers are still waiting for Ning 3.0 to have corresponding features such as Videos and Events (at the very least) before 3.0 is even able to receive our 2.0 site content.  Additionally, 2.0 customers would not likely be amenable to losing their Site Search, Moderators, Chat, Archiver/Backup, Photo Slideshows, Paid Access, music player, RSS modules, site map..etc etc.  Who wants to lose that many features and pay more?

              • I was force out.  When my time came to pay for another year they refused to renew my site as a 2.0 site. They insisted I upgrade to 3.0 and pay the increased price - I refused mainly because the stuff I was going to lose - like the online chat - was the main reason I was using Ning.  So they turned my site off and it is now gone.

                  • I was on this thread before and started getting the new email - I tried my login and it worked - what can I say.

                  • All I know is they contacted me and told my I HAD to upgrade to renew - I told them I didn't want to upgrade because I would loose my chat and that was the main reason I was using Ning.  They would not let me renew at 2.0 and I refused to upgrade.  So when my time ended they turned off my site - yes for non payment - but non payment because they wouldn't let me stay at 2.0.  Solael, you can say they won't do that all you want - but I know they did it to me. You might fool everyone else - but I know you are wrong.

                    • I just looked up my old email - on 3/14/14 I got an email saying 3.0 Phase One was ready and my site would be a good one to migrate. (I'll send you a copy if you want)  If I remember I called and talked to someone and told them I had a .com site in addition to my Ning site and only used Ning for the chat.  That if they were not offering chat in 3.0 I wanted to stay at 2.0 and would never upgrade to 3.0.  I was told I could not stay at 2.0 and they would turn my site of on 4/27/14(?) when my account expire.  From what I remember I was not offered an opportunity to renew at 2.0.  But I was adamant I would never upgrade to 3.0 if there was no chat.  I would have renewed at 2.0 if they had let me - but like I said - from what I remember that was not an option.

                    • I believe you Terry- I have heard now and then of inconsistencies in Ning payment support (or non-support) dependig on who you get.  It's certainly a bummer, in any case.

                    • No - my account had not lapsed.  It was a month or two before it was due.  But my account had over 3000 members - my guess was they wanted me to pay the higher price of 3.0.  When I said the only reason I was using Ning was for the chat and 3.0 didn't have chat so I would not upgrade they just flatly said they would turn my site off when it reached it's renewal date.  I said if I can't keep 2.0 fine.  When my renewal date came my site ended.

                    • then why is it it only happened to you and everyone else has had no trouble renewing thier 2.0

maybe you let it be shut off due tonon payment then tried getting it turned back on in that case yes i can see that as it would be like opening a new account

but theres something your not telling us cause nobody elsde was ever unable to renew thier 2.0

                    • Terry, had you let your payment/renewal lapse or expire unpaid for a few weeks or more before you attempted to renew it?  If so, that would have allowed them to consider your network defunct due to non-payment, and they then could have insisted you open a NEW network...and new networks were 3.0 only by that time....  is that what happened maybe?

                • impossible you absolujtely missunderstood i have both 2.0 and 3.,0 i reneweed both they cannot and willnot force you to switch to 3.0 tgill 3,.0 is ready you misunderstood andmost likely refused to pay and it was closed

but why has noone else  ever had this issue when we all have reneweed outr 2.0's
