Changes to Ning 3.0 Based on Your Feedback

We launched Ning 3.0 just over two weeks ago. While the overall market response has been really awesome, we have – based on the feedback here on Creators – somewhat underestimated the confusion and potential pain this new generation platform could create for some of you.

We value and carefully consider your input, and have decided to offer more flexibility and appreciation for you all as existing Ning customers.

Grandfathered in at 2x Member Limits

Rather than differentiate plans by features, storage and bandwidth, we set member limits for each plan. Number of members is a visible and intuitive measure of Network Creator success. We believe that you deserve a break when the time comes to upgrade. Therefore, existing Ning Networks will be grandfathered in at 2x the member limit of the new plans.

When you upgrade from Ning 2.0 to Ning 3.0, the Basic plan will support 2,000 members and the Performance plan will support 20,000 members. According to our data, this means that less than 1% of all our existing customers should see any price increase.

3-Month Post Upgrade Grace Period

We have also decided to give you an extra three more months after you upgrade before applying any member limits. And we will provide you with tools during and after the upgrade process to remove long-time inactive members from your network and clean house.

Limitless Moderators

Several of you voiced concerns with limiting the number of moderators. Recruiting active members to help moderate is a powerful tool for NCs to effectively manage their community and reward their most engaged members. We agree and we will be changing our pricing plans to reflect this. All Ning 3.0 subscribers can have an unlimited number of moderators (capped by your members plan limit). Moderators can be given full moderation privileges (approve, feature, edit, delete or suspend) for multiple features, content type and/or members. However the Ning 3.0 plans include a limitation on the number of Administrators—those with full access to the design, layout and settings of your network— Administrators will be limited to 2, 5 and 10 respectively.

'Powered by Ning | Mode Social' Footer Requirement

As we have shared in our FAQs and in several discussion topics, displaying "Powered by Ning | Mode Social" in network footers is important for the health of our business.  While we recognize that some of you will decide to leave the platform on account of it, we will not waive this requirement. However to mitigate the impact for some of you, we do intend to put an affiliate program in place that will allow you to gain some value for clickthroughs and referrals. We’ll also provide more flexibility in terms of where and how to display the logo (options such as centering it).

Ning 2.0 Upgrade, Migration and Retirement Timeline

As we have announced, we are working on a seamless upgrade process for Ning 2.0 Networks and plan to release it this summer. Once the upgrade process is available, Ning 2.0 Networks will have at least one year to move to Ning 3.0. We will confirm the exact schedule for the Ning 2.0 retirement when we officially release these migration tools. Before we officially release these tools, we are planning to work with many of you on a beta program for this key feature to make sure that it works as well as can be expected and minimize all changes and concerns for the vast majority of our existing customers.

We hope these changes address most of your concerns and give you a bit more confidence in our own ability to listen to you all. We appreciate the time and energy you pour into your communities, and are committed to delivering you a great and viable platform for years to come.

Thank you all for your feedback; we couldn’t do this without you. If you haven’t already, please take advantage of our offer to create a Ning 3.0 Sandbox Network. We would love for you to experience the redesign firsthand and get a jump-start on developing your Ning 3.0 Network. Don't forget to drop by and let us know how it's going!

                  • wow what a post.. So to recap. Its our fault why Ning are treating everyone like crap,Dont communicate anymore, Dont do updates anymore. Even follow their own roadmap or even update it and are about as transparent as a house brick and well known Ning creators are leaving left right and centre.

i have great respect for you S.E always have done right from the early days, but dont let the fear you must feel now after all your hard work with your site turn your head,

Ning 3 is utter crap, yeah the groups are great and its great for a non coder like me to be able to mess with the design studio thing and get something half decent.. but thats it..

My members hated ning 3, so much so they preferred we went back to an IPB forum so i did.

Im now playing with a spruz site, ive had it two days and although ive never been a fan of spruz i can see how that just outshines  ning 3. and i havent even turned on half the stuff like store or downloads or music player..and trust me when i say i never thought i would have heard me say that.. but thats not how good spruz is but how bad ning 3 is.

With spruz you dont have to go to outside help like the fantastic Jen just to get a photo slider,, or your good self and your brilliant ning tips.  Ning is being held up by the few remaning creators who are clever enough to be able to do it.You being one of them.

All anyone is doing is just waiting and waiting for these normal things like videos and event and nothing is coming.

I think you will find they (Glam.ning/mode/ are doing it to themselves, On purpose. The real question is, away from these forms of silly comments and debates is WHY!

im no business man or guru, all i am is an ordinary person that has lived 53 years and my instincts have kept me safe and alive all that time.   My instinct are telling me now that something is a bit screwy for any serious business to treat it clients like this if it isnt about to fold up this part of it..

You tell me, what bloody idiot treats the people who give it money for a service, like they are nothing. who does that, even the most rubbish of companies have somebody trying to smooth the waters, even if they are ripping you off with a bad service.

Loyalty is great man, but dont let them  kick you in the nuts

                    • my members love my ning 3 site and cannot wait to upgrade to it the only reason that evferyone hasnt created an account yet is thye lack of chat

but then again i did put a hell of alot of work into the design that made it very nice to use

i used a hell of alot of code to create something elegent

but yea the point is that the consumer can destroy the company easily with bad reviews and a company thats being ccrippled by its consumers can no longer seerve its consumers because of lack of resopurses

                      look at myspace

myspacce made a change and suddenly thousands of loyal myspave users stasrted saying myspace sucks and in just months it was nearky completekyh abandoned and dropped out of sight ..and it wasnt even the fact that the changes themselves were all that horible ..just difgerent the 1 and only thing that killed it was all the mmyspace sucks now comments

at 1st when 2.0 was announced yes they were extremnely communicative

i rememvber even the president of the company posting and replying to posts

but they were also geting a ton of abuse too

and there was a massive flood of negativity from day 1

actualy from the day glam stepped into the picture..

this cre4ated an aggressive air around here and a huge 'nings out to hget us" or 'glam only bought ning to destroy it" flood of posts

this scared away plenty of pppll including many ppl that have been with ning years

3.0 is not crap..its not perfect yet its not finnished yet but its potential is 1000 times more then 2.0..if it ever gets finnished

its a vastly superior platform in every way (except the laxck of music and vid uploades..its 1 and only drawback)

but yes the constant flood of negativity can destroy a comppany and it really seems like some people that is thier goal and only reason for posting

                      some are frustrated understandably

its easy to tell the diference

theres some that constantly make up nonsence like "ning has no emoployees anymore theres no dev team no engineers no support the entire company is down to 3 people" all these wild outragios rumors that are completely false and unfounded destroy consumer confidence

not only ppl who are looking for a platform but also every 1 of us that loved ning for years (every 1 of us that took these rumors as truth and didnt bother to investigate)

yes there has been a number that have left ning and ning does seem to have downsized since instead of 8 or 10 ppl answeing the phone now it seems i always getthe same 2..maybe 3

but cant that all be caused by the loss of millions in revenue due to so much rampant negativity?

look back at posts 2 years ago

all you saw was creators helping creators that lookes extremnely attractive to new creators so welcomeing so helpful that total newbs felt they could create a great site with all the freee help we ofgffered

compatre that to now.. all you see is

leave ningnow if you know whats good fort you

your a foool if you think ning will still be here in a year

this is scary shit..not only to prospective new creators..but to all of us

                      and its infective

now even the ppl that didnt believe the negativity are starting to think its true

dont get me wrong i dont say nings bl;ameless (i dont believe modeglam has much to do with it tho) i think nings lack of communication sux

i think the fact they are working on minor crap that could wait a year to be done and ignoring the core nesacary features sux

i think they are making alot of mistakes

but i also believe that they are suffering and unable to complete it as fast as they should because the extreme nevgativity is killing the company

example mountain dew recently had a lawsuite a guy said he found a mouse in a bottle of mt dew mt dew spokeespeople said thats impossible since mt dew woiuld completely dissolve a mouse..boners and all long before it reached the shelf

now some ppl heard that and went eww if it does thatto a mouse whats it doing to me and stopped drinking it..but imagine if 90% of the ppl that drank it started telling everyone dont drink this craop it will eat holes in your insides..in months the company would be bankrupt

as it is now hardly anyone knows this story ...even though its true

but the stories circulating about ning arent facts they are fear based speculations at best

and they are absolutely overpowering any and all possitive feedback

ning could survive with amedia blitz.. poissitive tv ads that sorta thing..if they could afford itthat is

but they dont do thst sort of advertising and they are being burried under anavalanche of negativity most of wich is simply made up nonsence

i think jen is really the only 1 that bothers researching whats true or not ..curtis just spews outrigtht hatredf strumelia posts nonstop misleading nonsence then theres quite a few that are level, headed but are being overwhelmed by the fear the rest are causing ..they just dont know so are in a panic and reinforcing the fear5 based nonsence

from the lil talks ive had with ning employees very lil has changed in the company structure yes a few have come and gone but overall the companies roughly the same size with the same number working on the site..cutbacks seem to be in support (phone support ..the ppl that answeer the ophones niot the ppl that solve the problems) and ppl that did nextto nothing but communicate to us on here

could you imagine running a company and hiring someone to just hang out and chit chat with the consumers whikle the consumers plotted to make it impossible to pay that person anymore/

          • Steve, this is also an enlightening discussion, from a year ago as well:

            https://creators.ning.com/announcements-from-ning/upgrading-to-ning-3-0

In it, Allison talks about Ning being flexible about migration deadlines, and about us waiting for needed features to be completed in later migration phases.

          • Steve, if you read this discussion from start to finish:

            https://creators.ning.com/announcements-from-ning/ready-to-migrate-p...

---you will see Ning recommending that people with 2.0 and lots of content like videos and events should WAIT until a later phase of migration , when 3.0 has the video and events feature etc.   It's not our fault that Ning is staying in 'phase one' for so long...they are supposed to be completing features for 3.0 so that we can migrate into it without losing huge amounts of our network content.  Ning needs to finish building the features that will receive our 2.0 content during migration.   Ning has been suggesting all along that we wait for a later migration phase if we need to move our videos and events and such.

It's now hard to find some of those older posts where Ning staff has assured us that we won't be forced to migrate without the needed features...but they can be found, and there were many of such assurances.

        • Steve, they were saying that thing about the one year deadline...about a year ago.  But then when things weren't coming along as planned, and customers started expressing worry and demanding dates for when features would be completed, Ning announced they were not going to give out any more dates or deadlines for now.  They dropped the 'one year from phase one' thing...that was clearly stated.  There is currently NO stated 'deadline' from Ning for migrating from 2.0 to 3.0.

    • Randy are you joking?

      • No, why?
        • Randy where on earth did you hear that?  I think there's no way Ning would 'force' us all to migrate from our 2.0s into half-finished half-baked 3.0 so-called 'networks', thus losing TONS of our content and many essential features.  That would be corporate suicide.Where are you getting this info from may I ask?

          • Sorry, that was the last info I got from my creator some time ago. I have not been here that much to keep up on what's been going on. Between my dad and me being in the hospital and doctors visits I have been out of the loop. I haven't even worked on designing our 3.0 for the last four months which still needs more work.
