Chat Feature Update on Ning 3.0 is ready!

Good news - it`s time to announce the release of the Chat Feature on Ning 3.0 platform.

Today we are happy to provide you with the opportunity to chat with other members of your Ning Network in the most convenient and efficient way. To facilitate your community management experience, we have added several new options:

  • New design
  • Customizable notifications
  • Message counter
  • Ability to create and manage groups (rename, add photos, delete and add users, block users)
  • Ability to send files

Chats 3.0 is an easy-to-use tool for building an effective network. With this release, you can customize notifications in accordance with your needs, rename your groups, add photos and users, use a message counter to monitor the number of messages, delete the messages you don’t need, send files, and suspend members from chat. The Chat Feature is available for both Ning 3.0 and 2.0 platforms.

We have a lot of ideas and plans, so please stay tuned for our updates and share your opinion with us!

  • I dunno. I got this new chat to connect for first time today, but darned if I know how to use it. I did manage to figure out if one clicks on the word main room when the main room is open one can see possible people online or at least a list with white or green lights. It seems completely non-intuitive. The old chat seemed easier and better....I cannot figure this one out.

    • Hi there!

If you wish to see the online members, please open the main room and click "Main Room>" on the chat bar itself, and the list of members would be opened to you. There you will see all participants of main room chat, and every member who is online at the moment would be marked with the green light. We are really sorry that you have found this design confusing.

      Best regards,

      Ning team.

      • Hi Kyryl, Thanks for replying. I eventually figured that part out though it is FAR from intuitive, and I am sure some might never figure it out. It seems overly complicated. A simple members online display like the old chat would be the most logical. I also can see no way for creating these Groups that are touted, only for renaming the Main Room. It all just looks a bit strange and not aesthetic or functional.  It also it states that certain members are online - ie they have a green light beside their name - when I know for a fact those members are away and are not online. The green light just stays on. I found myself in the weird position this morning of reluctantly checking out the CometChat website which I used to have when Ning 3 had no chat. I would have to swallow a big slice of humble pie to go crawling back to Cometchat after all the gip I gave them (lol), but the crazy thing is their chat was more streamlined and easy to use than this new chat available now and I may actually have to choose it again. If there was a way of just opting to use the previous chat you provided as a basic one before these updates came along that would suit me best.

Thanks again for your work here and keeping us updated.

        • Hi Anam,

The group beside the Main one could be created by adding several members to the conversation. In details, to great the other group, you should star the private chat with one of the members, then open the setting of that conversation and add more participants to it. When it's done by using the settings you will be able to change the name of the group and its logo.

Meanwhile, I have passed your feedback regarding the ability to get back to the old version of the chat to the management (actually I have updated existing report with details of your network and added your vote). When there will be any information regarding this I'll let you know.

          Best regards,

          Ning Team.

  • re: CHAT issues - - everything seems to be working today. Thanks Ning team

  • Ours is still not working properly.  I can see those online now.  If I post a comment in chat, there is over 10min, or more, lag before it shows in the chat window.  Also, the "Clear Chat Window" does not work. We are on Ning 2.

    • Cindy Update your support ticket - tell them what's happening.  Remember, support is not here in the forums.  It must not be across all platforms b/c ours is working fine (so far) in 2.0 and 3.0 although there's still no sound - but I can live without it right now.

      • Yep.  I was going to do that tomorrow if ours is still now working correctly.  I am sure they have to fix this across any servers.

  • Chat is back.  Thank goodness!  I was close to screaming at support last night. Glad they finally got someone on the job.
