  • "But there are already questions about one of Mode's main assets: Ning, the social network founded by Andreessen, which Mode acquired for $150 million in 2011. A post on Ning's site last week said that Cyndx, a company led by Mode board member Jim McVeigh, has "entered into an agreement with Mode Media to take over the operations of Ning."

According to one person with direct knowledge of the matter, Cyndx is one of several companies that have put in bids to acquire Ning, but no deal has closed yet. It's expected to close by the end of the week."

  • It's only me, the intolerant one (oh, the ironing :D)...... I have found there to be a SIGNIFICANT reduction in reversions to old design template over the past day or two, plus a significant reduction in Error messages when posting. Could be circumstantial, or anecdotal...but who knows. I remain hopeful. If employees of Cyndx are reading this - there are still no email notifications at all to new members who sign up, so they never know their membership has been approved, friend request etc. That's a bit awkward.

  • I would like to add something and that is....I wrote to NING support stating that I was very worried that NING was going to jump ship and leave our sites completely unattended so that is why I have not updated to yearly when my subscription is up which is in two days.  Support responded with apologies about my feelings and hoped that I might reconsider stating that the purchase of NING by Cyndx was a good thing and that Cyndx was making improvements to both NING 2.0 and 3.0 their top priority.  What might your reaction to this be?

      Hi Donna,
My reaction/response to this would be Cyndx should make a direct statement rather than letting low level staff speak on their behalf. It is third party communication / hearsay as they say in court and inadmissible. I guess we will just have to wait. Cyndx can always say we did not say that and we can't be responsible for what a tech support person says. I don't think there will be an acceptable substitution for the horse's mouth other than the horse's mouth.

      Garfield.

  • As one of the 'moaning minnies' or whatever some rather intolerant person described us as, I found this morning that my site seemed to be working normally so maybe the Cyndx elves have been working away quietly. Ning is great when it works! I am hoping that this is a permanent improvement so fingers crossed.

    • Susan I think the new company is probably workng very hard to fix the problem with ning sites being inacesible.  Yay for that! But we stilldont know what their long plan is (talk vs action)and many of us want to safeguard our site content- so we are takng steps to  be MORE than just "mentally prepared' like Phillip maybe.  I say GREAT if u choose to look on the bright side and hope for thebest- i hope it goes well too with the new ning owners! But ill not be sitting on my behind in the meantime LOL. Ning getting too expensive.

Im now leaning towars either SEphp or Jamroom bcause i think WP/BP does not have enough emphases on multi media  for my members. But SE seem to be pretty expensive compared to Jamroom, from my research so far. I dont have a thousand to spend but I want to save my ning2 content!

        • hmm, theyre looking pretty good price to me, compared  to nings new prices and to Socialengine!  lol  Most important tho, looks likethey will import most of my 2.0 content for a reasonable price. Only 3 platforms will save 2.0 site content to  one degree or another.

There is NO drag/drop platfrm that has all the features of ning2 in its heyday that u can get for cheaper than nings old prices, can anyone name one? sadly those days are gone i think. Beside, we now see where it gets us to have a platform contain our content with few ability to backup or leave, because we are not owning our site ourselves! There is a big price forthe convenience of some company holding yuor content and your platform. For me lesson learned!  :0

  • Cyndx hasn't owned Ning for a week. Give them time to get things up to speed. I called when everything was down Friday and was told that it was because they were moving Ning to their own servers.

I don't think any pressure has to be applied right now. Don't make them sorry they took Ning over.

    • Sorry, but I think pressure is very much needed. We have been dealing with  chaotic platform problems which has been making our networks seem like a complete joke. We are facing a steep price increase that is insane, to put it mildly, and we are once again jerked around by the platform that some of us has been on for a good many years. I think it is important for us to make it clear that we are not pleased with how things have gone or how things are going, and that we are not voiceless clowns. If we are expected to pay the highway robbery prices they have decided to charge us, we have every right to expect the platform works properly, and to not put up with being made to look like fools yet again.
