Current status of the Ning Platform is always available on the Ning Status Blog.

Today we're pleased to release a set of improvements to the Activity Feed feature on Ning 3.0 networks.

The updated Activity Feed allows members to view older items in the feed, and to view new items that have appeared since they loaded the page.

We've expanded the capabilities of Social Feeds so that you can have items automatically added to the Activity Feed via RSS and Twitter.

We've added a status feature, so that your members can leave status updates in the feed, and we've added link parsing for status updates, so that if a member adds a link, for example, to YouTube, the video is embedded and playable directly in the feed. Link parsing and embedding works with a wide variety of sites, including: YouTube, Dailymotion, Vine, Flickr video, Twitter, Soundcloud and Bandcamp. We'll also provide a preview of content for any link to a site that supports the OpenGraph standard.

With this release, members can also comment on status updates and individual photos directly in the feed.

In order to see and activate the new options that are available for the Activity Feed, head to the Activity Feed Settings page in the Social Site Manager.

    • Exactly. Mine is working just fine. Activity and membership had a huge boost after I migrated after this feature. Most of my concerns are met. They just need to fine tune things even more. Plus I pay half the price I paid from my 2.0

    • Could I see your 3.0 Thiago?
  • So, no-one else has a problem with Comments on Group Comment Walls not showing up in the new Latest Activity?

What function will the invisible Comment Walls that were rolled out in January 2014 serve then?  They will be entirely un-followable, un-noticeable, un-moderate-able, un-police-able, (unspellable). Unbelievable. Sigh. The only Comment Wall postings that will show up in the new Latest Activity is Comments on Members Pages.

      • Yes, i can see your point John. And I would accept if an activity feed was limited to each group. But as of now ..and ina  disimprovement from the Old activity feed, all comments on all groups are utterly invisible. One can have no idea that any comment has taken palce as there is also NO email notification of comments made on groups. Since about half my activity takes place as Comments on Group Walls this means my site is significantly hindered by this new latest activity in that at least 50% of Activity there is completely invisible now and unfindable in a way, and this is a dreadful disappointment. i would take the old activity feed back with all its limitations rather than this.

And as I pointed out here and on my ticket to Ning, the sites have become completely impossible to moderate now as a proportion of  Activity (large or small depending on site habits)  is presently COMPLETELY  invisible. This surely even goes against their own terms and conditions.

          • Ning have replied to me as follows

Thanks for writing. I have taken a look into group comment walls and activity feeds and I see that these are not bugs or issues, but that these functions are expected. When posting on a comment wall within a group, it does not post to the network's latest activity feed. As you see in the Activity Feed settings, updates to comment walls are not an option.

I understand you would like to have the capability to have these sorts of settings on your network, and I am more than happy to file a request on your behalf. Please keep in mind that a request does not guarantee that this feature will be built out. The more popular a request is, it will be more likely taken into consideration.

My training is in the field of law. People on here and at Ning may imagine that thus far this is simply a petty request on my behalf, because so much of my site activity happens to take place on Comment Walls and thus is for all practical purposes defunct. However, I can tell you that the Invisibility of any site activity, as has now transpired with Comments on Group Walls, will have long term legal implications for compliance with Terms and Conditions. And this is not something that can be dealt with casually at some point down the line. Breaches can be happening now. It is not just for me that this Activity has become completely invisible. It is so for you all. You may not feel the implications of it now, but eventually you will. That petty activity like  ''Profile Updates'' and ''New Friendships'' can be included in the Mainpage Activity Feed ahead of material posted  (even potentially libelous, or scandalous material) in Groups does not make logical sense to me.

To summarise this activity is now entirely invisible because...

No Latest Activity report of comment.

No movement of group in Group hub.

No record on members own 'Activity' tab on their page

No email notification to anyone of the activity taking place.

            Anyway.

            • That's and interesting reply from ning Anam because first, I have seen the activity in groups in the Activity Feed on the home page myself and second, when you go into groups "Manage Pages" there is an option to either have "site members" or "group members" see the content. Me thinks that the person who replied to you doesn't have all the correct info...very sad considering they should know it all! This doesn't give me much confidence at all in ning. Geeze I have only been running my site for a few weeks now and I'm worried this isn't going to get any better.

              • And I have just noticed the group activity will only show up on your own profile page when you yourself have made a comment in a group...that's useless! I know I made the comment! Everyone else needs to see it, not me! Its not showing up anymore on the main page feed and I have the settings set to "site members" to see it. Wow, they have some issues to deal with. I had it before the new status bar came in. At this rate people will get so disinterested and maybe not come back. I've worked too hard for that to happen like everyone else. I think its time to submit another ticket.

                • I have had to resort to putting up a "Site Update News" box to let people know what is happening because I want them to hang in there. This is embarrassing for me otherwise.

                  • Thank you Lea, Fire-tech, Skye and Kos.

May I ask you guys to please make a written request to Ning to have a setting available to check in Activity Settings on the Dashboard to enable Comments on Group Comment Walls to be included in the Latest Activity feed. That way those who don't want it don't have to have it, and those of us who recognise how integral it is to site participation and moderation may have the option to include them.

From the reply i received from Ning I see that they take into account the number of requests they receive about a certain item, and it would really help a lot if you guys added your voice. Otherwise they think it's just whiny old Anam again :) (laughing)

                    Best Wishes.

                    • Kos, I didn't realize that you, Suzie, and Skye all wound up requesting and being reverted back on your 2.0 networks.

This says a lot about the current functionality of 3.0 I think.  Especially after all the many countless hours you all spent trying to tweak 3.0 to be what you needed it to be.
