Current status of the Ning Platform is always available on the Ning Status Blog.

Today we're pleased to release a set of improvements to the Activity Feed feature on Ning 3.0 networks.

The updated Activity Feed allows members to view older items in the feed, and to view new items that have appeared since they loaded the page.

We've expanded the capabilities of Social Feeds so that you can have items automatically added to the Activity Feed via RSS and Twitter.

We've added a status feature, so that your members can leave status updates in the feed, and we've added link parsing for status updates, so that if a member adds a link, for example, to YouTube, the video is embedded and playable directly in the feed. Link parsing and embedding works with a wide variety of sites, including: YouTube, Dailymotion, Vine, Flickr video, Twitter, Soundcloud and Bandcamp. We'll also provide a preview of content for any link to a site that supports the OpenGraph standard.

With this release, members can also comment on status updates and individual photos directly in the feed.

In order to see and activate the new options that are available for the Activity Feed, head to the Activity Feed Settings page in the Social Site Manager.

You need to be a member of Ning Creators Social Network to add comments!

  • Do any programmers have any idea if it would be possible to add RSS feed to Group Comment Walls on Ning 3. I would then set up a separate activity feed to collect the RSS for Group Walls. Any ideas, solutions?

  • I have just migrated my site over completely from Ning 2 and I am completely lost without a share button, It also seems that my members do not get notifications of comments made on comment walls or new discussions added to forums, how are we supposed to keep them motivated to visit their groups etc. without any notifications....Communication is so important

    • I have been complaining about the Comments on Comment Walls for months to no avail, here and in tickets. Comments on Group Walls not only do not get notified to Group Members they also do not appear in Activity Feed, which results in a constant ''littering'' of invisible activity all over the site, i say litter because some are inappropriate and have to be moderated, but all are not ''inter-act-able with'' so they are just farts in the wind when it comes to site interaction.

And yes, no email notification of new Discussions posted in your Groups, and if you are NC or Admin, no email notification of replies to your discussions or comments on your blogs. Well, you can go around like a goose looking for the elusive ''Follow'' button, but members do not do that. Neither do I as a matter of fact. Ain't nobody got time for that.

  • I am very confused about the activity feed. I have to post links in Facebook to get any pictures to show up with links otherwise just the link shows up with no picture. Please advise if I am doing something wrong.

  • Interesting development on the Ning Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ning). If you look at the Posts to Page section (left hand side in the browser version), Ning have replied to Jordon McGee's post saying that a Ning 3.0 Archiver will be 'the next feature to be released'. Might that also be the last feature to be released...? It's certainly an odd one given that it gives customers an easy route out - unless that's exactly what you know they need....
    • Well, I for one will be delighted if they issue an archiver as it is a thing of terror to build and build a site with no means of archiving one's precious library...however uninteresting it may be to others. And if it makes migrating to another platform easier then all the better if it ever becomes necessary. I hope this IS their next plan. I had noted in my To Do Lists for Tuesday (tomorrow) ''Archive site to hard drive'' ....it is a night-marish task manually moving every post of consequence first to Word and then to hard drive :( meh.

      All the best!!

    • Wow, that verrrrry interesting.  If they provided a way to archive and take your own content with you, then they couldn't get sued if they shut everything down, based on their oft-repeated assurances that their customers 'own' their content.  They could cover their butts this way.

OR, maybe it's merely based on what they are receiving the most frequent requests for.  They might be getting inundated with demands for a backup function, based on large amounts of disgruntled customers wanting to leave 3.0 and wanting to take their content with them.

Either way, it's all based on the idea of customers safeguarding their 3.0 content in uncertain situations.  It may not actually mean Glam plans to shut down Ning.  But it's a tempting logic to see there.

  • How are the remaining updates coming along? What about the vids and events? I was sure it would be completed by now so I could finally make the switch. I anxiously await your reply :)

    • Simple answer is, they aren't coming along or at least they aren't telling us if they are or not. I think its been about 7months now since the roadmap was updated and nothing much at all seems to be progressing.

Saying all that though they had better hurry up because from what I read the first phase of the Ning 2 to Ning 3 started in march and they reckon full on migrations would start about 12 months after phase one began so that's what..18 weeks or so away..

    • An interesting figure might be Ning's own stats analytics comparing visitors numbers between its Ning 2 version and its relatively recently launched Ning 3 version.

Personally I find coming here a bore and a chore now. It seems static and sluggish compared to what it was when I first visited, and of course it revolves mostly around people's natural dissatisfaction and surprise at the ongoing limitations on full-price product.

But hey! At least here I get email notifications! On my own site I get notified about almost nada. :D

And you may all be pleased to know I have thus far resisted the temptation to run around posting naughty pics on Group Comment Walls here on Creators, just to demonstrate how  moderation of site content has taken an impossible blow because such posts as rendered invisible. But keep yer eyes peeled. ;) Hehe.
