Ready to Migrate? Phase One is Here!

Last week, we started taking Ning 2.0 to 3.0 migration requests from Network Creators that participated in our Sandbox program. This week, we are excited to announce that we are ready to open up migration to anyone who has been so patiently waiting for it. Phase One migration is on!

To upgrade your network, simply submit this migration request form

Migration Process Overview

After you submit your migration request, a member of the Advocacy team will become your personal migration guide. He or she will work on copying your Ning 2.0 Network's data over to Ning 3.0. When the migration process is complete, your migration guide will ask you to review the content and publish it onto your new 3.0 Network. For a more detailed explanation of the process, check out this guide on What to Expect when You’re Migrating.

At this time, we can automatically migrate members, blogs, forums, photos, groups, and everything outlined on this page from your Ning 2.0 into your new Ning 3.0 site.

If you would like to back up any content that can’t be automatically migrated to Ning 3.0, we recommend using the Ning Network Archiver.

If your current Ning 2.0 network utilizes features that are on our Ning 3.0 product roadmap, then you might want to wait until a later phase of migration, as other types of content will be available for migration in a future phase.

Do I have to migrate right now?

Short answer: nope! Not yet. We noted last year when we launched Ning 3.0 that all Ning 2.0 customers would need to upgrade to Ning 3.0 at some point, and would have at least a year from the availability of the migration tools to do so. If you'd prefer to wait for a later phase of migration—either because you aren't ready yet, or you're waiting for more features to be released for Ning 3.0—you're more than welcome to upgrade during a later phase of the migration process.

            • There is no doubt that I prefer it the way it is right now, I am used to it, but I have looked at and tested out alternatives and as of yet have not found one that even comes close so I guess I will just have to get used to the changes. I guess you could probably use the broadcast message feature to share your posts, bit tedious though!

              • Mysticpagan I am guessing you have not recently tried Social engine or BuddyPress as a lot of us have. Those are actually not only close but better than Ning. Now if Ning has all their eggs in their basket then maybe we would not be searching for other alternatives, your broadcast system on the 3.0 doesn't work, neither do the shares or the follow (one has to follow their own post just to get any information from that post). Please take the time to look over the discussion that has been happening in Alternatives and or this one carefully so you can see what everyone has been experiencing.

                • Yes I agree there are many flaws, I have had a sandbox since the beginning and have followed many posts with great interest, I have submitted reports and notified Ning of bugs. To be honest I am just sick and tired of waiting, I don't feel that I can go forward with my site with this migration hanging over my head which is why I have been considering whether to just migrate now and see how it goes, if it really doesn't work then I will start looking at alternatives again. I have tried BuddyPress and absolutely hated it, not tried Social engine though so I may give it a go if it offers a free trial.

                  • You might want to check out excreators.com where many are trying out different platforms with the help of TDB.

  • I am a little confused as to how the migration tool will handle the migration of groups as the format is quite different.

    • All migrate mysticpagan we may not know the how of it but it does migrate. Group discussions and all BUT it really is still a shell, many things work and it looks great yet too many things do not work, Broadcast abilities, sharing (which is truly nonexistent), activity feed, Events, etc....
At this point I think we have been put on the back burner and I am clueless as to how long. My suggestion from experience is not to migrate till phase 2 if at all and I certainly would ask pertinent questions as to What works before I would even do that. Do not make assumptions like I did that Ning 3 is fully operational.

      • Thank you Skye, yes of course I do realise that the migration tool is not completely ready yet but from what I understand most things will get migrated over, I am still very much undecided and really appreciate your comments...Thanks!

    • Hi Lora, what are the main problems you have experienced, I am thinking of migrating my 2 to my sandbox 3 as it seems most of the features I need are now dealt with by the migration tool. How did you find the groups when you migrated.

      • Hi Lora, just so you understand (in case you don't already)- once you migrate your 2.0 into your sandbox 3.0,  the 3.0 will no longer be a sandbox- it'll be a full fledged official 3.0 and you'll need to activate a 3.0 payment plan for it.  Ning would then de-activate/eliminate your 2.0 after you check that everything was migrated ok.

"most of the features I need are now dealt with by the migration tool"  -I'm a bit confused as to what you mean by that..?  You do know that your 2.0 videos will not migrate over because 3.0 does not have a video feature yet...right?

  • I have submitted and confirmed my migration request. I erroneously suggested in my original email that I did not want to migrate content to my sandbox network. I have subsequently emailed to say that I DO want content migrated to my sandbox network which I have set up ( at least in part ) to receive it. How soon will drafts start to appear in my 'unlinked pages' section?

    network is americymru.net

    sandbox network is welshamerican.ning.com
