Update to Product Roadmap and Communication Changes

Thank you for your patience over the past several weeks. As you know, we closely follow and appreciate the feedback you share on Creators, and we’d like to make a couple of important announcements related to your posts.

First, regarding the product, the team has been working over the last several months on re-architecting and re-developing a new Activity Feed for Ning 3.0. The new Activity Feed will include the addition of statuses and more embeds based on pasting links into the status field. This isn’t everything that the team is working on but the most significant short term new capability. We are planning to release this feature in July.

We also wanted to address the downtime that some of you experienced on May 26th and 27th. After the scheduled maintenance on Monday to update a group of servers, we discovered that some of the backup servers were malfunctioning. We've corrected this and have changed our operating procedures to prevent this from happening again.

On the communication side, based on several factors including resources and priorities, we have made the decision that we will no longer be involved in providing day-to-day support and feedback through the Creators community. Communication from the Ning team needs to be focused on product capabilities and new releases and other general announcements such as this one. Our team is focusing on expanding some of the planned features that we already have in development. Once we have more information to share with you, we will do it here.

Please continue to use this community as a productive place to have conversations about how to build, grow, and manage Ning Networks. We will continue to provide technical support through tickets and phone. As always, phone support is available to those with networks on Pro, Performance and Ultimate plans. Our technical support team is available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm PST.

      • Thanks CocteauBoy,

That was a nice in-depth review on the two sites, it's much appreciated. I can easily say you have been more help to me in one article, than Ning has over an 18 month period.

I am going to run a free trial on both of them to see which one I prefer. So hopefully I will be up and running in a few weeks.

Once again, thanks for the help.

        Jason

        • Jason if you do that be sure you are signing up for SocialEngine PHP, rather than the SocialEngine Cloud version...or you won't be able to apply all the wonderful plugins available.  As for hosting, I hear Arvixe is a good choice that many people are using and liking.

        • I also can tell you that Social Engine PHP has everything 2.0 has and more.  The difference is, you own your content and will have to buy the package and provide hosting.  It is a learning curve for me but at least I don't have to find codes to add features.

      • Hi CocteauBoy,

Could you please recommend an Alternative as I am sick of waiting for Ning.

I need everything thats on Ning 3.0 plus chat and events. I have delayed launching my website for over a year now as I desperately need "Events". My site will be event based.

        Thanks in advance.

        Jason

        • @Jason, I cannot say enough to praise the software SocialEngine. The PHP version. My site is frickin' gorgeous, has all social amenities, pretty great support (I had a bit of an issue with them at first, but they have redeemed themselves and actually do have pretty helpful support - WAY better than Ning, that's for sure), and the 3rd-party plugins help expand on the already-awesome default functions in flawless and wonderful ways. You can check out my beta site at http://explore.truthloveenergy.com and check it out using the guest link at the top. A lot of the features are not obvious to a visitor, but you will get the gist. Great software, great (one-time) price, low fees for expanding on your plugins, pretty good support, and excellent features... I am so relieved to have found it.  Other contenders were Joomla with the JomSocial plugin and Joomla with the EasySocial plugin. Both of those were amazing, but I went with SocialEngine because, while the Joomla options were *almost* perfect, the learning curve for users and for myself was much softer for SocialEngine. It was immediately friendly. Also, with SocialEngine, your entire network from Ning can migrate. I did not try that, but I'm hearing only successful results from others doing it. I only migrated memberships, not content. I did not want a replica of the mess that is Ning, so I preferred to restructure my content using the more extensive features of SocialEngine. For instance, Forums on SE PHP can have Category/Forums/Topics, as opposed to the very limited Ning format of Forum/Topic. With SocialEngine, no one is stuck with Ning, that's for sure.

          • Thanks CocteauB  !

    • Hi Deborah,

Welcome to the forum!  I visited your site, very nice.  I saw some awesome cat pics, and since I'm a cat lover, I liked your site right away. :-)  It looks like you have a lot of content there, and the revenue share concept looks interesting.  I wish you all the best with your site!

Whether you keep it on Ning or move it, is up to you of course.  I think that the choices available each have their positives and negatives, plus the unknown factor of what the future may bring, for any of them.  It's great to have choices!  There is plenty of information here about people's experiences and opinions on Ning and its alternatives, to help with your choice.  I hope whatever your choice is, that it works out great for you!

      "TJ"

    • The answer is no, Deborah. Ning is the best place to have a community. These people who say that there are alternatives simply do not define what they mean by "alternative" and, in the end, what appears are platforms where you have to pay more or have more technical knowledge.

      • More and more network creators are finding relief and satisfaction with alternative platforms.  Yes Ning 3.0 could be truly great...one day... um, maybe years from now...?   Or maybe not.  But if you feel Ning is the 'best place to have a community' Thiago, then I'm so glad for you, more power to you- you just keep on telling the folks what the 'real answer' is!     =8-*

Meanwhile, others are starting to pull their heads out of the sand... or out of ..somewhere...lol
