Update to Product Roadmap and Communication Changes

Thank you for your patience over the past several weeks. As you know, we closely follow and appreciate the feedback you share on Creators, and we’d like to make a couple of important announcements related to your posts.

First, regarding the product, the team has been working over the last several months on re-architecting and re-developing a new Activity Feed for Ning 3.0. The new Activity Feed will include the addition of statuses and more embeds based on pasting links into the status field. This isn’t everything that the team is working on but the most significant short term new capability. We are planning to release this feature in July.

We also wanted to address the downtime that some of you experienced on May 26th and 27th. After the scheduled maintenance on Monday to update a group of servers, we discovered that some of the backup servers were malfunctioning. We've corrected this and have changed our operating procedures to prevent this from happening again.

On the communication side, based on several factors including resources and priorities, we have made the decision that we will no longer be involved in providing day-to-day support and feedback through the Creators community. Communication from the Ning team needs to be focused on product capabilities and new releases and other general announcements such as this one. Our team is focusing on expanding some of the planned features that we already have in development. Once we have more information to share with you, we will do it here.

Please continue to use this community as a productive place to have conversations about how to build, grow, and manage Ning Networks. We will continue to provide technical support through tickets and phone. As always, phone support is available to those with networks on Pro, Performance and Ultimate plans. Our technical support team is available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm PST.

  • In Waiting

These are projects we're collecting information about and that will move into planning as we finish the projects that are in development. These are not listed by priority or their potential order.

Video Embeds, Chat, Events, Search, Paid Access, Moderator Roles, and more.

Fer cryin' out loud!   How many years are they thinking they'll be 'in waiting' and 'collecting information about planning' features which are ESSENTIAL for most people's social networks?  Not even in the planning stage yet???   LAME

  • Last update on progress was March 2014:

    In Development

These are projects that we're building right now.

Activity Updates (suppose to be out in July, fingers crossed)

Options for showing additional items in the feed and for leaving status updates.

    Articles

A new way of organizing longer content pieces

    Forum Notifications

Ability for members to opt into receiving notifications of new discussions in a forum.

    APIs

The ability to create new members and content programatically. This is available now, but we're working on a few items required to release it to all networks, including sample client libraries and friendly documentation. If you're a developer and want to take the API for spin in the current rough-and-ready state, create a support ticket and let us know.

    In Planning

These are projects that we're drawing up plans and specifications for.

    Profile Page Options

Options for your members to select a background for their page, and the ability for NCs to add a user-editable textbox on profile pages.

      • Well said Nor Cal!

I get the feeling Mode Media is designing the platform from an advertising perspective on social.  They see the value of offering a community platform to brands that spend thousands of dollars on advertising to generate traffic where the primary purpose of a site is to deliver content and collect a captive audience.

What's given you that feeling?  It would seem, what they're promoting heavily, is their video arm to compete against Netflix and other streaming services.

        • The way I see it-   Mode bought up Ning, then immediately downsized Ning staff and spending. According to Mode's own announcements, they utilized parts from the Ning platform to help build its new video mega-project.  That video project is where Mode put its money. Apparently they found something in Ning's code guts well worth obtaining the rights to, which helped them realize their video project/empire they hope will rival and beat out Netflix/Vimeo/youtube.

          • Dude, I'm trying.  A three martini lunch was calling my name for a bit there however I braved the storm and withstood temptation.  A punching bag certainly would've come in handy.  *lol*

Completely agree with you on one-way media however I certainly feel that Creators would appreciate Mode clarifying their vision of the future.  Development thus far in 2014 and lack of transparency certainly does not give one a warm-n-fuzzy feeling.  Thank you for getting back to me.  Have a great week.

          • Great point, NorCal.

  • I see all the complaints and WOW , personally I love what I can do on Ning, and for the price, can't beat it ! Is there another platform out there that will let me do all the same things I can with Ning? This is my first social site, check it out here http://thedailynewssocialsite.ning.com and let me know if I can duplicate this anywhere as the lack of communication is worrying me too!

    • There are several other options that do far more than Ning, far more affordable, and treat their customers with respect with support that goes above and beyond. Hands down.

Don't let that one guy who is trolling the forums here tell you differently. He's completely misleading you as a way to serve his own ego. When someone is insecure and defensive in their beliefs or position, it helps them to feel better by recruiting others. Those of us discussing the necessity for alternatives are doing so only because it has come to that point. It took us a long time to get to this point, and it wasn't a flippant process. If you browse the forum for our older posts, you'll see that many of us were fighting for Ning for years, and supporting one another when Ning would not support us. Enough is enough. Now we continue that support for one another while Ning remains out of touch, continuing to fail promises and alienate their core clients. Those of us who have remained with Ning now reach out in support of one another in this difficult and daunting change because we have to, not because we want to. The other guy is just being defensive and trying to justify his investments. I don't blame him. I did the same thing for years. We all did.

Anyway, I've tried several alternatives. I've paid money out the a$$ to test all of these, as well as tried all the free ones. I know what I'm talking about. Different alternatives appeal to different people, so there will be differences of opinion, but the alternatives are there, beating Ning, hands down.

You may think that Ning is great if you are new to hosting a community, and new to Ning, but let's just say that complaints and discussion of alternatives is dominant in their own forums for a reason. And, yes, your site could be easily duplicated by most any of the other alternatives.
