This is what has always kept me interested. This is what is exciting about cultivating a community. You can always make the platform adapt more and more to the culture of your members. This is what your member expect, after all. They want to see something new everytime they log in. It is up to you to provide that.</p>
<p>Tips left for other Ning Creators get buried with time, so I developed a method to resurface those good ones for another round of help. A while back I showed you <a href="http://creators.ning.com/forum/topics/megaload-of-ning-tips-tricks-and-hacks-over-200" target="_self">over 200 Ning tips</a> that I had scraped out of my own profile discussions dating back to 2007. There was quite a bit of garbage in there so I have gone through those and picked out around <a rel="nofollow" href="https://elink.io/9ac35" target="_blank">110 tips which are still relevant</a> and have compiled them <a rel="nofollow" href="https://elink.io/9ac35" target="_blank">into a collection for you</a>. You can simply learn something new every day from these tips alone. So, if you think you have done all you can do to make your network the best it can be, i am here to show you that you still have much to do. Here is the PDF of the link collection for download as well. </p>

<p>If you need help with some aspect of your Ning community or would simply like to redesign or build your network, <a href="http://creators.ning.com/members/JFarrow" target="_self">reach out to me</a> and let's discuss it. It may be much simpler than you think. I also have a form that you can fill out for <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.jbfarrow.com/projects/ning-help" target="_blank">private help here</a>. Good luck and by all means, be creative!</p>

What I am going to show you all today is something I've been trying to figure out for around 5 years, but finally sat down and hammered it out. This solution works for both Ning 2.0 and Ning 3.0 Networks, but in slightly different ways. You can use it to embed Member maps (maps in general), other pages, Google Sites, you name it! I'll go through both so that everyone can give it a try regardless of the platform. Let's Begin.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong><span class="font-size-6">Full Screen iFrames for Ning 2.0</span></strong></span></p>
<p>In order to make this work, you mist be adding an iframe to a Page (can be a page in a group) because they have the option of adding code to the <head> of page. You'll want to first add this block of code to that "Custom" section.</p>
<div style="background-color: #ffe4e1; padding: 3px;">
<br> <meta charset="utf-8">
<br> <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=edge">
<br>
<br> <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
<br> <script>
</div>
<div style="background-color: #ffe4e1; padding: 3px;">
document.getElementsByTagName("html")[0].className = "js";
<br> </script>
<br>
<br> <link rel="stylesheet" href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1047752?profile=original">
<br>
<br> <link rel="stylesheet" href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1047790?profile=original" media="screen" type="text/css" />
</div>
<p>Now you'll want to add this code to your actual page inside the text box, replacing the red url with the one you are iframing into the page:</p>
<div style="background-color: #ffe4e1; padding: 3px;">
<br> <script type="text/javascript"> document.getElementsByTagName("html")[0].className = "js"; </script>
<br> <div class="wrapper"> <div class="iframe"><iframe src="
<strong><span style="color: #ff0000;">http://yoursiteiframe.com/index.html</span></strong>">
<br> </iframe>
<br> </div>
<br> </div>
<br>
<br> <script src='http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/2265035?profile=original' type="text/javascript"> </script>
<br> <script src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/2265054?profile=original" type="text/javascript"> </script>
</div>
<p></p>
<p><span class="font-size-5"><a rel="nofollow" href="http://landsurveyorsunited.com/page/video-categories" target="_blank">Demo Using a Google Sites Page</a></span></p>
<p><span class="font-size-5"><a target="_blank" href="http://landsurveyorsunited.com/page/video-categories"><img class="align-full" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1868463?profile=original" alt="Full width Iframes for Ning 2.0" width="100%"></a></span></p>
<p></p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong><span class="font-size-6">Full Screen iFrames for Ning 3.0</span></strong></span></p>
<p>Now in 3.0, as with most things related to code, it is much simpler to get it working with less headache. Take a look at this full block of code which can be added to one HTML module inside Sites & Pages or as a custom page inside a Group.</p>
<div style="background-color: #ffe4e1; padding: 3px;">
<br> <p><link rel="stylesheet" href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1047752?profile=original" /> <link rel="stylesheet" href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1047790?profile=original" media="screen" type="text/css" /></p>
<br> <meta charset="utf-8" /><meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=edge" />
<br> <meta name="description" content="" /><meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1" />
<br> <script type="text/javascript"> document.getElementsByTagName("html")[0].className = "js";
<br> </script>
<br> <div class="wrapper">
<br> <div class="iframe"><iframe width="100%" height="240" src="

<br> </div>
<br> <script src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/2265035?profile=original" type="text/javascript"></script>
<br> <script src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/2265054?profile=original" type="text/javascript"></script>

<p> </p>
<p><strong><span style="color: #ff0000;">Examples of info I have found by checking Facebook first: </span></strong></p>
<ul>
<li><span style="color: #000000;">Guy filled out the <em>minimum</em> on his profile.<br />
I found him on FB and he had a profile pic and local friends.<br />
<strong>APPROVED<br />
 </strong></span></li>
<li>Lady filled out profile but withdrew membership.<br />
I found her on FB with no pic and no friends.<br />
<strong>APPROVAL N/A</strong> and I reported and blocked her (?) on FB for not being a real person.</li>
<li>Lady filled out profile, said she had friends here (where my network is themed)  but doesn't name any. Does a pretty good BS job, but puts a major city for her hometown (NYC).<br />
I go to FB and there's no account for that email. This doesn't deny their existence, but what are the chances of someone contacting their "friend" that they don't name through a local social network instead of through email? Additionally the chance of them NOT being on FB? Slim. So I use the email to ask who their friend is and wait. No answer in a day?<br />
<strong>REJECTED</strong>.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong><span style="color: #ff0000;">Some other red flags for spam:</span></strong></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Email address</strong> is a name or word followed by numbers & the provider is Hotmail, Yahoo or Gmail. Ex: jennifer2345@hotmail.com. If their email address is the name of their internet service, it's probably not spam. Ex: jennifersmith@att.net or jennifersmith@suddenlink.com.</li>
<li><strong>Profile is barely filled out</strong>. Someone might do the work to figure out the answer to my test question (What's the local newspaper, What's the governor's wife's name) because it's required. But then they slack on other questions. Don't be afraid to email them and ask something extra. Explain that protecting your members from spam is important so you have to go the extra mile before approving someone. No answer? Reject them.</li>
</ul>
<p> </p>
<p>I'd like to find out other ways you've learned to avoid spammers. Do tell!</p>

This week, I'm spending some of my time reminding our members which feature to use when so I thought I share some of our process with you.<br> <br> Have you ever noticed (or gotten frustrated) that you members will post content in the wrong features? Blogs in forums, forums in blogs, events as blogs…ring a bell?<br> <br> A while back a study was conducted on our networks. One of the major observations was that there was no continuity to where our members posted and found content. To address this we've taken the following steps:</p>
<ol>
<li>We distinguished and <a rel="nofollow" href="http://jamaicaplain.neighborsforneighbors.org/profiles/blogs/reminder-when-to-add-a-blog">published</a> how each feature is best used and gave concrete examples.</li>

<li>We made a <a rel="nofollow" href="http://prezi.com/mtljhfw9nwog/">Prezi.com presentation</a> that quickly explains which features to use when. Feel free to use our prezi or save it and customize it for your own networks.</li>
<li>We <a href="http://help.ning.com/cgi-bin/ning.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3058">edited our welcome message</a> to mention which features to use when. Here is the link on how to edit your welcome message.</li>

<br />
We have technical problems that may be inherent to all social networks, not just our Ning networks. The technology for searching inside networks that have new information added continuously is not very advanced, and this is general, not just at Ning.<br />
<br />
So now I have written a blog post trying to explain -- in simple language -- how the search system works on a Ning network, for the benefit of my members.<br />
<br />
See:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://cooperative.ning.com/profiles/blogs/our-website-search-system">http://cooperative.ning.com/profiles/blogs/our-website-search-system</a><br />
<br />
I have also described a couple of alternatives to using the Ning search (which I like very much, when it works).<br />
<br />
I would be happy if other Network Creators can adapt my explanation to their own situation. And I would be happy for any advice on how to improve the explanation I have given.<br />
<br />

<p>One of my Ning networks is getting enough members that I'd like it to start having a local focus. In an ideal world Ning would use the town/state/country information in member profiles to geotag. That would allow us to target by geography, e.g., send a message to anyone within twenty miles of Boston, MA.But you can hack a geography listing. I've put together a <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.quakerquaker.org/page/find-friends" target="_blank">page of my Ning's members</a> that lists by state, country and region. I'll show you how to do a region, which should give you an idea how to recreate something like this.Say I want to have a list of everyone in the New England region of the U.S. I go to my regular Members page and click on "Advanced Search." Go down to the city state field and type in each of the states in the region with "OR" in between: "me OR ma OR nh OR vt OR ct OR ri". The results tell me I have 42 members: yea! But the address bar is what I want. Ning is awesomely good at having transparent URLs. It's not pretty but it's there and can be shortened down a bit to:<a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.quakerquaker.org/profiles/members/search?location=me+OR+ma+OR+nh+OR+vt+OR+ct+OR+ri">http://www.quakerquaker.org/profiles/members/search?location=me+OR+ma+OR+nh+OR+vt+OR+ct+OR+ri</a>I can now make that a link on any page. On my network, I went to manage tabs, added a page and spent an hour or so making up those links. It should work for any network. This link, for instances, gives you <a href="http://creators.ning.com/profiles/members/search?location=me+OR+ma+OR+nh+OR+vt+OR+ct+OR+ri">New England members of the Ning Creators Network</a>!<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20100128-qgnmyu2hfr1a5uj58ed7uw1t3t.jpg" align="left" />Let me know if you've found any geo-locating tricks. To the left is a image of a Google Maps mashup I did with my Ning membership list. This trick's not particularly easy. You have to run it through a geotagging service, convert the output file to KML and then upload it for Gmaps to see. Once you get through it all it's cool (I could actually embed that map right here, except that it has some member data I don't want to make public).</p>
