Getting free press for your networkhttps://creators.ning.com/blogs/getting-free-press-for-your2011-07-01T10:56:38.000Z2011-07-01T10:56:38.000ZAlex Olejnikhttps://creators.ning.com/members/AlexOlejnik

One way of getting traffic to your network is by using the press, and I do mean USING, not paying.

Free press is great if you can get it, and I'm gonna tell you exactly how to do it.
So far I've been featured in local press as well as a couple of glossy monthly mags, 5 publications in all, and it did not cost me a penny!

Check out the coverage so far

One thing you have to remember is that newspapers and magazines are on the lookout for stories, simple as that, they have pages to fill, and finding good content is a challenge for newspapers and magazines these days.
So all you have to do is come up with an interesting story that links to your network somehow, and you're halfway there.

For my network (dog lovers), I simply came up with a story about meeting so many people when I walk my dogs...

Expressing that my local park was a network of dog owners, which of course gave me the idea for k9united ;)

This is not the most interesting of stories granted, and some publications would not print it, but this is of course a rather 'mild' story, and some newspapers still printed the story, giving my network loads of exposure.

-----------------------------------------------

So lets say you now have a story that links to your network, obviously the more interesting your story, the more chance you have of getting it published, so be creative...

Now it's time to email that story to as many newspapers and magazines as you can.... easy peasy

Now bear in mind that journalists and PR people get hundreds of emails with press releases, and it's fair to say that yours could quite easily get ignored.... this is why it is essential that you follow it up with a phone call.

Had I not done this my press release would have been ignored.

Obviously when you do your follow up calls, be professional, and talk about how your press release would be of interest to THEIR readers.

A few phone calls later and I was in the paper!

So I was one of the lucky winners to spend some time with Ning down in Austin, and I just wanted to drop in to give some feedback from the perspective of Creators.

SXSW is billed as a Tech Conference, but it's really a Festival. I think what that means to Creators is the following...

This is aimed towards those who are interested in making money via your network, and feel ready to do that (big audience, big traffic, unique segment of a market). I know that's not everyone, but I feel like it'd be one major agenda that might drive you to consider going to SXSWi if you haven't been.

Industry People: Austin is all about people. Everyone is there. Bloggers, Company Founders, marketing teams, PR people, advertising people, and thought leaders. There's lots of educational and non-profit conversations happening. If you wanted to meet them, hear from them, or pitch them (in a non-pitchy way), Austin is a great opportunity. I'd build a list of hopeful meetings, reach out beforehand to set a few coffee chats up, and then spend your time there using Foursquare/Gowalla/Twitter to track down the one's you don't have on your schedule.

Feedback: The early adopter crowd is there in full force. They're willing to hear your ideas, your community dynamics, and your story. Literally everyone there has a story, and is open to share it in exchange for yours. There's no reason to be shy, because rather than criticize or shoot you down, you'll get valuable feedback and insight into what else is happening in your space.

Promotions/Marketing: I was really underwhelmed at the 'buzz building' tactics in Austin this year, despite the opportunity. With 15,000 early adopters/open minded geeks walking around, all carrying with them an audience of interested parties, you can really make a bang with very little COST. It's more a matter of doing something really innovative. Perfect example: the Ning team hands out free pie slices during their 'office hours'...and they were not only gone in short time, but generated buzz that I heard for the next 24 hours at parties and via twitter.

Parties: Parties are a big, big part of the agenda down there. Problem is that they're expensive and exclusive, generally. Thing is, the best ones happened off the radar. If you want to bring people together to talk about you or your community, do that in a social setting 'off campus'.

I'm sure there's more, but that's a lot. If anyone has questions, just let me know...I'm happy to share!

Besides what Ning has done to provide us with online tools to benefit from our members motivation to form community, What else can be done to take advantage of your members enthusiasm? More then 3000 invitations have been sent by the members of Acoreanos, currently just short of 600 members connected to the Azores Islands have joined. That let's me know my community is built around a topic of importance. But I needed a way to reach more members.I have had success reaching new members by making a downloadable flyer that members can print.

Providing printable materials for members to post around their communities on message boards, at restaurants, schools, and other real world locations has helped to develop a more diverse base of participants. I have received updates from members who are putting the flyer in the local library, social clubs, art galleries, and ethnic grocers. Several of the most active participants have told me they learned about the community after they saw the flyer I have made available for members of Acoreanos to circulate offline.

My primary goal is to connect people with a common cultural bond. Azoreans and their descendants are spread around the globe. As with most ethnic groups there are isolated communities where immigrants have concentrated. I personally do not live in an area with an active Azorean social network, so starting the online network is a way for me to stay connected and grow in cultural pride. The flyer is helping me reach the real world community in hopes of connecting long lost friends and families.

The praise and gratitude I receive from people in similar situations is gratifying and propels me to keep the mission of growing the community. If anyone has other ideas for growing the member base on a small budget, I'd love to hear from you.
