It doesn't matter whether they comment or just get on to read. The POINT is I could see that they actually DID log on in the past six months!! (No one's going to get access to my content without logging in...number one! I've closed down everything but the main page to stop that nonsense).
I've had people JOIN and then that's the last I see of them. They don't add content or anything, so how do I know whether they're silently reading or not?? I have no log in data!
I find it helpful too, to know how many people have visited my network lately. That's why I added a feature that shows a list of members who have been on my site in the last 3 days, right on my Main page.
I find it useful to know when a visitor logged in last. However, I would not take a members privileges away just because they did not want to contribute for the last six months. I have many members that sign up and then realize they can VIEW all areas of the site...we provide information for our industry and the social networking is an option, which the majority do not use. I would NOT be happy having any of my members deleted by a 3rd party script or by Ning. We will decide on deletion of a member.
This is a very good idea. If someone has not being to a site for six months, a network creator should be given the options to first email the person to see why they are not visiting. Wait another month to see if they will visit the site before deleting or removing them completely. And I think this should be designed in such a way that it is optional; if you like the feature, you can accept it or not use it at all. But there are still more important things to request for too......more features for your network, third party APPs is something I am not interested in, you want something that is made for your network by Ning. Let look or ask for something inviting, interesting and eye catching for the network. We need something big and exciting this is what will make people to want to come back to your site.
Though I'd like to be able to see (in the back end) when someone was last active, I absolutely don't want any automatic deletion of accounts. I've had a lot of members who have been inactive for more than a year and who suddenly reappear, and the appeal of my Ning networks is to a considerable extent based on the size of the membership.
Of course, this will vary depending on the kind of network you run, but please, don't start doing this to mine!
Knowing who that are is great, removing them from your list is tossing money down the drain in a network that is designed to generate revenue.
There are many ways to generate revenue for your site but 2 of the biggest ways used is based on the number of active visitors per month and the other is based on the total number of members, active or inactive, that you have in the network.
i think this applicationg should be optional for site owners, i beleive sometimes people have due reason for being inactive like financial or family problems, i have known of members to be inactive for 3, 6 or even 12 months for unforseen reasone and become an active member again, loosing their account will upset and deter them, it needs to be members that had no activity since joining, you know the type accept invite and forget it :(
Just curious Diane but has your Managers tool for removing members been deactivated?
Maybe instead of "insisting" an auto-removal tool be made available you should maybe concentrate more on determining WHY all of these members no longer visit your site. If you have a considerable number of members who aren't returning then examine the root of the problem and treat the disease, not the symptoms.
I doubt Ning will be too interested in applying this auto-removal tool anyway. Inactive members still make Ning look artificially larger and more active and since they have eliminated the free sites I am guessing their numbers have dwindled considerably ..... which looks bad when you are shopping around for a buyer.
David, it would be stupid of me to remove a member without a basic knowledge of when they last logged on. Right now I CANNOT determine that one very important fact!!!!!!!
I don't run a "for profit" site. Sometimes you have people who are "joiners" (they give stupid profile answers to even the required ones, they never respond to messages from the ADMIN, etc.) These are the people I'd like to actually have some hard data on. If I could PROVE that they haven't logged on since the very first time they joined with their stupid answers, then I'd feel better about dumping them. These kinds of members are of NO use to me!!!
I'm not asking for an auto-removal tool anyway. You're putting words in my mouth! I want the OPTION to get rid of "joiners" only. (There would be no content to remove because they don't contribute any. And that's because they never log on. AND...that's because, in my opinion, they're not interested in my site in the first place and they need to be tossed out with the bath water.) THESE are the only ones I'm interested in. Not the ones who have family crises or funerals or terminal illness and other such catastrophic events in their lives. I'm talking totally dead weight members here.
I personally think it would be a mistake to remove someone from the site b/c they haven't been active for X amount of time. Besides the point of lurking, there are valid reasons why people don't come back to the site for long periods of time but do come back later (not all cases, I know, but they do happen).
Very recently, I had a private discussion with a member who told me about her prolonged absence due to family problems, etc. If we had applied a rule like this one and disabled her account, we would probably have lost her as a member for good.
