Here's a problem I am trying to solve, and a way that might do the job, if it can work. (Feel to point me in a different direction if the path I’m on is hopeless).

Problem:

I want to list two categories of events on the home page, but clearly separated. We list events that are hosted by our professional association, but also externally hosted events of interest to our members. I want to always show our events above the external events. I know, within a single Event widget, I can choose to show only “featured” events, but then no other events are shown. Or I can show all upcoming events, but then our hosted events are lost in the long list that results.

Solution?

I thought one way to solve this, if Ning will let me, is to add two separate Event widgets to the Home page, with the top one set to show only Featured, and the bottom one to show Upcoming (or better yet, non-Featured).

Suggestions?

Thanks,

Trevor

Hi Trevor,

You mention that you are listing events which are also hosted externally-- is this correct? If this is the case, is there an option to grab an RSS feed of the events you're listing externally? If so, you can use the RSS feed feature to automatically import any events from this external source. For more information about the RSS feed feature, check out this Ning Help Center entry: http://help.ning.com/?faq=2983.

I hope that helps :)

Jason,

Thanks for the quick reply.

Actually my use of "hosted" is a bit misleading, as I meant it in the sense of an organization hosting an event, not the web location. All the events I want to display within a Home page widget are listed within our Ning site, but in the physical world are sponsored by other organizations. I want to list my organization’s events above theirs. Does that make more sense?

You mentioned RSS. Could I use an RSS feed from Ning it self to simulate a second Events widget?

Hi Trevor,

New on the Creators network, just found your post: I've got the very same issue. Have you solved it since then? If yes, would you mind explaining me?

Thx,

Vanessa.

Vanessa,

I never did find a solution. However, a friend with better programming skills than me may be giving it a try soon. I'll post here if he works it out.

Trevor

Thx for your reply so long after you posted your issue! Indeed, I would be very interested to hearing from your friend's solution, should he manage to find one! Maybe one I could replicate not being an IT girl!

Vanessa.

Trevor, Vanessa,

Did you every find a solution to this problem?

I'm also trying to do the same.

Thanks

Richard
