Adding a splash/intro page

I have searched and found tutorials on this, but it's all greek to me. I consider myself to be computer savvy but these tutorials seem pretty intimidating.

Can anyone help me with this? I want to build an intro/splash page that shows a youtube video and that has an option to skip the splash page for return users.

Seems there should be an option built into the network under the "manage" tab.

I like the cleanness of thefrugalgolfer. how did you/they make it so that there is one column at the top and two at the bottom of the main page?
