i have 3 sites now
site 1 has been up 1 year has 1700 members i started running ads on site 1 a month ago as a test
that site is  www.dreadlockssite.com

1sy month ads brought in 250 dollars
so inspired by the success of that site i started 2 new sites
site 2 has been up a week, is not getting any search trafic yet (needs more content added) its all about green clean technology
www.greentechnologyforums.com and i expect that site to bring in way more from ads once its built up more
site 3
www.legalisecannabis.org has been up just 3 days
again when sites 2 and 3 get used more i expect the ads from them to bring in more then from site 1 which now easily pays for all 3

i really dont see why people freaked out over the new pay fees since running your own ads makes them profitable

ps im not profit orientated at all, i used the excess funds to run my own adwords ad campains and bring in more trafic to the sites)

I'm ad-phobic, but your site looks fine. the ads are small, not in your face. Thanks for sharing all your detailed knowledge.

Pat
your welcome
and there is the 1 big banner which i found annoying but then added the network logo on either side of it framing it and it made it "fit" seem more aw part of the site
u may find lil tricks like that useful make em seem more built into the design maybe even add an image frame or design the text are around them or use ads as a break between section
like somewhere u might put an image separator or linebar a banner would work as well as just a graphical separator
deleted the post with statistics but i can say ive made 300 bucks in 2 months so far and slowly increasing
If the ads pay for the site, why do we, as administrators, have to sign up to Google to collect money to give to Ning? The ads are on the free sites already. If the ads are making enough money to pay for the site, there is no need for Ning to charge.

way too many low trafic or no trafic sites that fit in the mini catagory they generate no income for ning but lots of overhead (my guess anyway) most likely 2/3 of the sites on ning fit thbat catagory sites that were startr=ed and forgotten or never were used or have 10 members only with literaly millions of useless sites not pulling theyre own weight it made sense to switch to a fee based and alow you to control your own revenues and pay a flat rate
Thanks for the wake up call, Jaap! My network has 1,564 members and has been visited by 105,889 unique visitors with 408,717 page loads since August 28th, 2007. I set up the network to help fellow authors and provide a meeting place to share thoughts and ideas about writing, publishing and marketing books. I did not set it up as a business. I am far too busy doing other things to spend time running a paid-for network. As a free network, I can decide how much time I want to give to the site. I won't even consider paying for the site. If Ning want to delete it, then so be it.

I guess the point has been that perhaps simple ads like ones you have on site can pay for Pro or even Premium plans. With that many members that should be a distinct possibility, with no extra work beyond set up. I don't think that turns it into business, just helps to pay the cost of hosting. Just my 2 cents.
exactly
copy paste and dome the $ is direct deposited even so its like 1 sec work and the site funds itself
good tips...i'm gonna try some of these suggestions on Land Surveyors United
Question please, what are those little ads that hover over your mouse that say "this will disappear" after 5 seconds?
just added those today
its called adbull http://beta.adbull.com

im just trying it out suposed to have a higher payrate and click rate and if it is as good as i was tiold im gonna discontinue everything else except the right side google adsense ad
Thank you.
