afraid of losing new members if their membership requires approval? Implement this tip and leave a great first impression!

Hi folks!

This is something I've wanted to do since I went to an approval only status on new members. I was always afraid of losing people with the withdraw request  link that comes up with the notification, but the spam complaints by current members were worse, so I broke down and implemented it.

To alleviate people's worries and impatience, I changed the language of the notification, that originally read:

"Your profile details must be approved by the Administrator before you can become a member of %s. You will receive an email once your profile is approved."

To the following:

"To protect our current members from spam, your profile details must be reviewed and approved by the Administrator before you can become an active member of %s. You will receive an email once your profile is approved. This process is usually very fast, so please click continue and surf the site, we'll have you going in no time! Thank you for your interest in (My Network Name)!

(*this may only be for public or public/show only main page network privacy settings. It may not appear for private networks, I'm not sure)

Also, on the main page where the login/out box is, the standard language states, "Your membership is pending approval."  After searching for this in the language editor, i edited it to read, "Your membership is in review! We'll be right with you!"

I feel that these minor changes are more pleasing, and explain why you approve new members, giving the applying member a sense of security that you DO take member and network security seriously, this is a KILLER first impression to leave on your new members!

I hope you all find this tip useful!

no problem, Debby....it has gone over very well, as well as SERIOUSLY cut down on spam on the site

Great tip! Thx!

We recently have had a terrible time with spam, which forced us to approve all new members. We were worried this would dissuade some members from joining, but this language change is a great suggestion. We've gone ahead and implemented it on our site and it worked great. Thanks for this suggestion!

no problem, glad it's working for you!
