Anyone Know How To Search Members Within A Certain Group?

I have a LOT of groups, and I have groups with LOTS of members.  I need a search that just applies to Members within a certain Group.  Has someone figured out how to do this?  There must be a way.

For instance, let's say you have a Billiards site and you have groups that are targeted to local players.  So there is a Dallas Billiards group and a Santa Monica Sharks group, etc.  Now, let's say you have a Profile Question that asks if a member is a "beginner, intermediate, advanced or professional."  So in essence, I want my site visitors to be able to go into the Dallas group and search for all members within that group that have listed themselves as "intermediate".

Does anyone here know how to make this happen?

Thanks,

Mark

The only ways I would know to do it involve having them include the name of the group in their profile somehow (IE in their "about me" profile question, or maybe have a list of groups and ask them to choose all the groups they would like to join. Otherwise - I really don't know.

You can create member categories by going  into your dashboard and click on member management.  It might be a little time consuming at first if you have a lot of members, but it will become more manageable after that. You can even use custom icons to put on their profile photo that will distinguish them. If the groups have a logo, you can use their logo with a letter on it such as B for beginner, A for advanced, etc.

I haven't set up many categories yet, but I think that there are tabs on the Member Page for each category.

I hope this helps you.

That's true but you only get so many - and he may not want to waste them on this - or maybe he has too many groups. I know that wouldn't work for me because I have WAYYY too many groups!

Yep, I have 600 groups.

Thanks for those ideas, but with 30k or 40k members, you really can't do anything manually.  I was hoping that someone knew how to structure the search code within a group.  Right now there is a search bar in a Group but it only looks at the Name field.

Like on this page for instance:  http://tennisopolis.com/group/eastbay/user/list

I'm wondering if there is a way to search all the data fields of members within that group.  I don't think it would be hard for someone with a good understanding of programming.

Thanks,

Mark

<form action="http://tennisopolis.com/groups/user/list?groupId=1869403%3AGroup%3A57965">
<p class="left">
<input type="hidden" name="groupId" value="1869403:Group:57965" /> <input name="q" type="text" class="textfield" value="" />
<a class="xg_icon xg_icon-search" title="Search Members" onclick="x$(this).parents('form').submit();" href="#">Search Members</a>
</p>
</form>

That is the code that displays the search bar.  Does anyone know why it only targets the members names in the search?  Thx.

There is a way to get an answer, but it ignores groups and deals with the whole membership.  Do an advanced search on the entire membership, specifying city and skill level (you did say skill level was part of the sign-on questions).  That will give you a list. But you won't get suburban members who listed their suburb as their geographical location, instead of a city.  And it will give you everyone in that geographical area with that skill level, whether or not they joined the city group.  And it will only work if you specified that you allow searches on geographical location.  But that is something you can edit any time.

Thank you.  Yes, this is what I have been doing up 'till now.  The problem, as you have noticed, is that for a metropolitan area like Dallas, for instance, that is made up of many small suburbs, the search does not really work because because there are just too many suburb names to enter and the search will not work if you enter them all. You have to do a separate search for each one.

Hello I am a novice at this but Maybe can you create pages for each group...just trying to help and just an opinion.

great Website, congrats.
