Hi all !

I don't know if it's the right network to post this type of question. Don't hesitate to say if it's not...

I have a ning network on www.example.com. I'm planning to make a site on foo.example.com. I want users on foo.example.com authenticate with their www.example.com credentials (the goal is to impose a www.example.com registration to access to foo.example.com). The foo.example.com will be done with Drupal. Of course if I want to do that, I must write an auth module for Drupal specific to Ning (i can do that myself).
My question is simple. I saw some modules to do that for docuwiki (here's the source) and for wordpress (here's the ning help) but these are fairly old items. Does this method is still allowed by Ning? If yes, are there some plans to make it evolve? If no, is there another method I can use?

Thanks in advance for your answers, tips or experiences on this topic ...

PS : cross-posted on Developer Network, but bo answer at this time.

Hi Pierre,

I think you have a couple of options. The endpoint used by the wordpress plugin still works, so you can use that as the basis for your drupal authentication. You can post the email & password and it will return a success boolean, profile photo url and a few details.

Alternatively, the new Ning APIs will allow you to authenticate members using 2 legged OAuth; this means that your members would need to sign into your drupal site using their network credentials and you would make an API request to authenticate them and store the token once they've successfully authenticated. The APIs haven't been released yet, but we're expecting them to be ready in the next 2 or 3 weeks.

Thanks,
Phil
Hi Phil.

Thank you for this clear answer that helps me to better understand how I can do what I want...
Just one last question: what is the "sustainability" of the first solution? Does this system will be removed after the deployment of new APIs?

Thanks,
Pierre
Hi Pierre,

We don't have plans to remove the endpoint used for the wordpress plugin.

Thanks,
Phil
Hi Phil,

I am interested in doing a similar thing as Pierre.

I can't find a link that will allow me to download the wordpress plugin code, Is it still available?

Concerning the Ning API -- is it still the plan that only Pro level accounts will have this capability? How about Plus accounts? Is there a plan to let developers have access to create apps with out the Pro account?

Thanks

Marc
Hi Marcus,

We're checking to see if the plugin code is still available; I'll let you know.

The APIs will only be available to Pro networks, but we'll have a special rate for developers so that they can have access to a Pro network for development purposes.

Thanks,
Phil

That's great news, for me, anyway! LoL I'm looking forward to hearing more about this.

Thanks and best wishes!
