We have signed an agreement with an other Web Site to have their members to subscribe  to our Ning network.

This would be an important boost to our community, as it would mean to get about 2.000 new members in one shot.

However, the point is that we do not know how to efficiently manage the registration process for them.

The other Web Site will provide us with a conventional CSV file containing all data needed to complete the registration process.

Unfortunately, to the best of our knowledge, the only possible option seems to be to (a) print out the file, (b) read relevant data, and (c) manually register each new member, one at a time.

This would be a really painful and inefficient process.

So the question is the following: is there some way to automatically register new members into a Ning network, starting from a conventional CSV file?

If some of the NC colleagues has a better idea, we would be really really grateful if it could be shared here!

Thanks in advance!

  • I think it's very important. If NING have a good tool to let other network to transfer their member data to NING. More and more people will like to move and use NING.

Actually I have lots of friends want to use my site but they have huge contents in the old site and don't know how to move. Ask them to have a brand new start? That need a big courage.

  • @Franco, you could get the emails from the csv, copy and paste them into an email, and copy the invite link and paste it into the email....I'd hyperlink it and make it say CLICK HERE TO JOIN....at any rate, this will do it all in one shot....be sure they know to add your email you are sending it from to their contacts or it may land in spam folder.

@Alex, If a website wants to move to NING, the easiest way would be to first, get your NING network, spend the 30 day trial building and testing, then do the same thing I suggested above, as well as send out and post a bulletin that the old network is moving to bigger and better things (new platform), and in 30 days you are closing the old one.....over the 30 days, invite your best members to come help you test, and once ready you all can work on bringing everyone over....worked very well for me when I first moved here. To try to be integratable with any given other platform for the ability to just move content would be extremely difficult, if not impossible.

  • Hi, Franco! We don't offer a way to import email addresses into your network without members specifically agreeing to create an account, which means providing a password and agreeing to a Terms of Service. While I can understand that it might be convenient to automatically subscribe someone, it's also important to obtain permission, I think. I would probably advise using the invitation system and send all of the prospective members an email invitation with a compelling message to get them to join -- as Speed Racer suggests.
    • Speed Racer, Eric,

      Thanks for your replies.

I see the point of Eric.

In fact, we are proceeding based on the email invitation system, as per your suggestion.

    • Hi Eric,

Thanks for the info.  We need to pre-seed registrations because our traffic is coming from another, known portal.  We would like to use Ning (or a competing product) ;-) to create a community support site for existing customers.  The customers would navigate here after already being logged into our main product portal.  So we already know who they are, and they have already agreed to a relationship with us (because they're our customer and we already maintain their login at the main portal.)

Ideally, I would like to pre-seed login info so that all they have to do is click the Community link from our product, and if it's the first time, choose a password and done.

On another note -- I think you should not make people confirm their email address **if they are responding to an Invite at that email address.  This is a duplication.  If they click a link in the invite sent to their email, then you already know it is a valid email; there's no need to make them confirm it again with a 2nd confirmation cycle.
