Hi all!

I received a message from Facebook about the use of their Graph API. Asking me to migrate all calls to a newer version of the Graph API - see below. Because I can imagine more people receive this message, I post this question both here and and through the ticket system. Can someone tell me if I can just upgrade to a newer version of the Graph API, without affecting the Facebook signing in/up functionality on my network?

I followed the instructions Facebook provided, to check if 'my app will be affected by this upgrade'. Their 'version upgrade tool tells me: "Your app hasn't made enough calls to the Graph API to show any info, or there are no changes for the methods you selected between v2.2 and v2.8". It tells me so for every version (from 2.3 up to 2.8). 63 members make use of the social sign up/in through Facebook on my network.

If I can just upgrade, what is the latest version I can upgrade to? The latest is currently v2.8.

Thanks a lot for your attention.

v2.2 Upgrade Reminder  You can view this and other Developer Notifications related to your app, in the App Dashboard.Sociaal platform LOC currently has access to Graph API v2.2 which will reach the end of its 2-year lifetime on 27 March, 2017. To ensure a smooth transition, please migrate all calls to Graph API v2.3 or higher. To check if your app will be affected by this upgrade you can use the Version Upgrade Tool. This will show you which calls, if any, are affected by this change as well as any replacement calls in newer versions. If you do not see any calls, your app may not be affected by this change. You can also use our changelog to see the full list of changes in all Graph API versions.

  • Hi there,

The new app that I have created on my test network is working fine, however, unfortunately, we don't have the facebook app of your version in order to run the test. You can try to upgrade it to the latest version (v2.8) and check whether it's working or not, I suppose it would, but if it wouldn't just create the new one.

    Hope that helps.

    Best regards,

    Ning Team.

    • Hi Kyryl,

Thanks for your reply. I was not able to upgrade, so I created a new Facebook Graph API. That automatically makes it the latest version. It did not seem to work at first, but now it does. Patience and testing seemed key.

I went through a Ning 3.0 help page, to see if I could do something to make it work. Everything already seemed in place, so I did not have to make adjustments. What I did read though, on that page is this message:"Deleting and creating a new Facebook Sign In app will cause existing members who are using their Facebook credentials to sign in to need to re-authorize the connection from your network to their Facebook accounts. After they re-authorize this connection, they will be able to sign in again as usual."

Maybe you did not know about this, but I would have liked to know that, before I installed the new API. Because then I could have informed members in one way or another, that this would happen. So there would not be unanswered questions in peoples minds. Like what might be going on with my information? Especially in this time where privacy issues are up front in peoples minds, this is important in the way we want to communicate about changes in our network. So maybe you can use this exeperience when you communicate about this in the future.

A last wuestion: is there an option so I can see which members exactly use the social sign-in/sign-up options? And communicate with only those people? It seams I can now only see the amount of members using those. Thanks for your attention again,

      Douwe

      • Hi there,

Yes, I didn't know that sorry.

Unfortunately, there is no way to see who have signed up by using the facebook.

        Best regards,

        Ning Team.

        • Hi Kyryl,

          Thanks for your quick reply.

That's a pity. Is this kind of functionality something that we can ask Ning to add? I know I can ask you if you can forward this to the Ning development team, as a feature request. It would be nice if you could do that.

But I would also like to know, is it possible for creators like me to ask you, or 'network creators for hire', to custom build/add such functionality, 'under the ning hood', if we pay for that? Is there such an option?

If so, can you also let me know how far that option goes? 1) Can I just ask/pay Ning to create whatever additional features? Do you have policy on this? And 2) how far can network creators for hire go 'under the hood'? Are there restrictions/areas/code they can not access? I would like to know this, for more features that Ning currently not offers yet. Looking forward to your reply again. Thanks!

          Douwe
