CATEGORIES, CATEGORIES, CATEGORIES... (Member categories, blog categories, group categories...)

I'm a few weeks into building my network now, which is exciting, but also frustrating. The main frustration I have is the lack of categories.

If you see this post and you agree that ning needs to prioritize providing categories and sub-categories for members, blogs, groups, events (and any other section of the network!), PLEASE RESPOND TO THIS POST so that we hopefully can get ning's attention.

Categories would be a tremendous help in managing and monetizing networks:

  • We need member categories and sub-categories in order to:
    • Charge different membership fees based on member category
    • Provide different network access based on member category
  • We need categories and sub-categories for all the various sections of the network in order to:
    • Better organize content
    • Better administer/moderate content
    • Better monetize content

A network creator should have a way to:

  • Provide specific categories of members the ability to blog in specific blog categories
    • The creator should be able to charge a fee based on the specific member category and blog category
    • Once set up, these members would be able to manage their own blog posts and would automatically be charged (monthly, quarterly, annually, or charged per blog post)
  • Provide specific categories of members the ability to set up events in specific event categories
    • The creator should be able to charge a fee based on the specific member category and blog category
    • Once set up, these members would be able to manage their own events and would automatically be charged (monthly, quarterly, annually, or charged per event)
  • Same thing with Forums, Pages, Photos, Videos...

You'll be happy to hear that we may be adding categories to a lot of types of content. However, I don't have a definitive date. Hoping to get it moved up on the roadmap as an official project. I don't think we have plans to make categories work with the optional Paid Access add-on. Right now, the initial version of Paid Access isn't feature-based. That could change over time, but I'm not sure category control to the level of granularity you're talking about would be one that would be added first if we do go down the feature-control road for Paid Access.

I saw a similar response on a July 2010 post. Still years off?

Hey, Robin! Can you please point me to that post?

I have always tried to be clear in the past that while this was a great idea, it wasn't one we actually had seriously considered putting on our roadmap. Just recently, we did decide that this was a project we were going to tackle.

Categories and Tags is needed on the NING network.

In network with large content, the need to categorize and tagging come in handy and usefull for the members.

Any news on categories?

Sadly, no news on categories.

Ok, but thanks for letting know.

i need categories for events and photos

Really need categories for video :(

Hello,

News about categories?

No news about categories. Still one of our biggest requests, though.

Any updates on category functionality?  Inconsistent blog tagging is a huge issue for our educator network, as its utility depends on standard tags/categories.  Thanks!
