Do you have  advertising on your site?  How do you approach?

  • My network is only 2,500 or so. I have a PayPal donation button, which rarely got any attention until I told them I was developing a new site so we could leave Ning. I got a really good response from that. Not nearly enough to cover even a fraction of the development costs, but it's still very touching that so many people were generous- some were exceptionally generous. I don't ever expect donations, but many gave $10 or so and a couple dropped $100. There is no normal, and I was deeply touched that anyone gave anything.

I have done several different ways of monetization. Google ads stunk. I never made a penny from them. I also tried Chikita, Bing ads, and the link-syle ads. None of them performed and a lot of them had adult ads I couldn't get rid of.

I have done Project Wonderful, which is a tiny outfit, but it has a whole lot of heart. You create the ad spots and people bid, often based on traffic. Sometimes my ad spots generate a buck or two a day each and other times it's pennies, just because it's bidding and they're small. But, they mostly attract bloggers and web comics as advertisers, so you don't wind up with a whole lot of spammy ads and you have total control the "rating of ads," so you can choose all ages, safe for work, adult, etc, and you can block specific advertisers and ads really easily. I LOVE what they do. I want to see them grow. You probably won't make a whole lot with them, but they're the friendliest ad platform, in my opinion. Also, there are no minimum traffic thresholds for this one, which is nice for little guys. You also have the ability to set minimum bids and such... it's a really powerful user-driven interface. You have total power over what displays and what doesn't. Payment is via PayPal whenever you transfer funds. I have done this repeatedly without issue. Oh, and their customer service rocks. I have only contacted them 3 times over the years, but I got a friendly and personal response each time. They have a very friendly team that seems to genuinely care.

The most profitable one for me so far has been Taboola. You have to have a minimum of 500,000 page views per month to get in, but if you qualify, you can earn good money. Their ads are mostly content, though they do work in one targeted ad per set or so. You'll get an account rep who will work with you to set up the right size blocks. I have a long column of 6 or so ads and a 3x2 block as well, in different places. Taboola tends to put it on your members to limit the ads they see. They can opt out of certain ads or advertisers by clicking the ad. You can block things, too, but I found this really ineffective. At first, I was really disappointed with the quality of ads. I got a lot of half naked women and click-bait type stuff. I worked with my rep and he removed those. He warned me that my PPC rate would go  down, but my stats actually improved. I have kind of a highbrow audience, so they were disgusted with the spammy ads. The PPC rate varies, but it tends to sit at about 6 cents. Early on, it was only 1-2 cents. But,  my members consume content like nothing else. They're info junkies, so content-based ads work really well for them. Payment is via Payoneer, direct to your bank account. It takes 1.5-2 months before you get any revenue from it, and then they deposit monthly.

The other thing I'm trying out right now is adplay. This gives you a block of games that pop up for people to play, as well as a Google ad in the block, too. You get paid for impressions and for clicks, but my "earnings" have been incredibly modest. I was told that I could have custom blocks made, like I get with Taboola, but customer service stinks and nobody there has returned my messages in months. As part of my redesign, I really wanted to have a couple different sized blocks in different parts of the site. I haven't really worked with their ads. I was redesigning my site already when I signed up with them, so I just chucked them in one spot on my home page. They're more prominent on my redesign, but, like I said, I can't get them to contact me back about changing up the size, so that's a big negative. I also haven't gotten a payment from them yet, so I don't know what's up with them. As far as I know, they're really small and brand new, so they may still be working out the kinks and training their people. The games they offer are fun and quick, though, like Flappy Bird, so they're not intrusive at all and fun to have on the site. Even if the revenue is a flop, I kind of like them. The jury's out on them. I will have to wait a couple of months to see if things improve and whether I ever see a penny from them.

Lastly, I have done some sponsored content. I don't recommend any company at this point, but I know I was offered $150 to write a blog and throw in some links- done and done. lol That was the quickest cash I ever earned. Seriously, like 15 minutes of work, and I was able to tailor what I wrote to my members, so it wasn't "spam." We all chatted on the thread about related things and it was like a normal discussion. Spammy companies, like spell casters and such, will probably offer in the neighborhood of $200-300 per blog, but you have to promote them. I wouldn't do that. For sponsored content, I suggest you shop around and find out what companies that are relevant to your audience will pay you for posting a blog or forum discussion.

I'll email you a link to my site. I don't like mixing the business/ management end of it with what people find in Google related to it.

    • Thank you for taking the time to share all your hard work. I hope others will share their experiences too.
  • I use a Paypal button!  I put up a request for funds---In fact my members just funded me for nearly 4 months -so far in only 3 days!!! Another member suggested a Go Fund Me account so I did that too.. received my first donation today! So yes by all means ask members...

You can see my request in the  top right column --http://www.912communique.com/#axzz4Jb1akshH
