Is there any code to cut down the amount of chat saved in the room before it clears?  My chat stores a day or more chat unless we clear it manually.

My members are very uneasy about this. There isn't always someone around to clear the chat history and most of my users are backing off chatting because they do not want what they said in the room on view a day later..

Not only that it slows the chat down if not cleared often.

Thanks for any help anyone can be

My guys like the fact there's no history as quite often what is said in chat, needs to stay in chat and not be viewed by the public.  If it *was* archived, there'd be less motivation to post in a Group, Blog or Forum area.

o/c you can also place separate [3rd party] chatrooms inside of Groups so they can have their own discussions.  Just a thought.  Best of luck-

Sadly we do not use a separate chat room but you can search Creators and see what others have to say.  I do know some use Skysa and Meebo bars; or at least they have in the past.  Maybe a few others will chime in here...........good luck

Ok so chat holds the last 50 messages I believe. How can we reduce this to say 10?

Its not the amount of chat held in room when one is logged in that bothers my chatters but rather the amount one can see when they log in . When someone logs in they should not be able to see the past 50 messages in the room.

The other thing is why would people stay in the chat for great amounts of time when they can pop in, catch up and leave without taking part.

Losing chatters because of this is so frustrating, Hopefully somehow this can be changed.

Thanks

I highly doubt Ning will allow tweaks to this.  It is what it is and their sites function just fine worldwide.  After all, if your members are chatting, they're not involved in your site, posting and building your SEO and brand.  Maybe you could outline some basic Chat policies and procedures [etiquette] in a Member email and include if they're *not* going to engage in chat, to please leave it disconnected.
