Update: Please provide feedback on how popping out chat should work, asked here.
If you've looked at the Ning product roadmap recently, you've noticed that some Chat improvements are on the way. We've started to work on Chat, and wanted to share what we have in mind and get Network Creators an early chance to share their feedback.
The biggest changes we have planned are:
Here is today's Flash-based chat:
And here's what Chat might look like (click on the image to see it bigger):
There's a lot to process in looking at this new design, and there have been a ton of discussions on Creators about Chat. We want your feedback, though, about the overall design and functionality.
A few of big questions have come up that we want to pose to you:
We'd love your feedback on these issues, as we start to develop chat. Down the road, we'll get into more specific feature additions, but for now, I'd like to keep this discussion focused on the big design/behavior issues I've raised above.

Being net connect friendlier also..is many on not so hot net that have hard time with chat we have now ..and has allways been that with those on wifi in certain areas or slower net..so that alone would be great improvement and is due to the flash..
Sounds good to me, Evan. Thanks.
Thanks for making the move we reeealy needed this! I was waiting eagerly to see this change!
Is there a possibility of having plugins or addons done or even bbcode in chat? For my network its what we need we rely on chat. As for the footer bar make it more visible like facebook has it or like skysa and the ability for us to be able to add those extra pages either social sites like twitter google+ facebook pages and other just as like skysa has but of course not like it looks so round, i like it better as is square :-) The ability to change the colors and even for members to change the some settings of sounds and most important to add the "IGNORE" mode, as of many of my members get irritated by some others and just to get avoided by misunderstandings and abusive stuff to have more in control like someone would have on IRC or similar! Another point is if the chat was like xmpp then we could have the chance to build a desktop application just like any jabber software. Dunno if that is all possible! Just putting some ideas I already had for it, hope it helps others too!
Thanks in Advance!
Wow..good news for all NCs... it seems like very light chat room and it's so easy to access.
YES, I HATE THE CURRENT CHAT, ITS USELESS AND SEEMS BUGGY
FOOTER IS FINE, BUT MAYBE THE OPTION SHOULD BE THERE FOR OTHER CREATORS
I LIKE HOW THE NEW CHAT LOOKS IN THE PIC ABOVE, HOWEVER POP OUT FEATURE MIGHT BE AN IMPORTANT FEATURE FOR VERY ACTIVE CHAT ROOMS.
THIS IS ONE OF MY BIGGEST CONCERNS, PLEASE PUT SOUNDS IN CHAT. GIVE THE OPTION TO TURN OFF. I THINK SIMPLE SOUNDS INDICATING YOU'VE RECEIVED A MESSAGE OR EVEN AN ALERT SOUND OR BUZZ/SHAKE OPTION THAT WOULD ALERT THE USER THAT SOMEONE IS TRYING TO GET THEIR ATTENTION, BY SHAKING THE CHAT WINDOW, SIMILAR TO MSN. SOUNDS CAN BE SIMILAR TO FACEBOOK'S CHAT SOUNDS.
How about an option to insert a little banner ad/text box into the main chat window where you see a list of the people online? This would be a great option to earn revenue.
Also, can you put smiley faces in there somehow?
Thanks, can't wait!
In terms of sounds, this new chat will almost certainly have audio notifications like today and the ability for users to turn them off. We're trying to figure out, though, whether NCs still need to be able to control whether sounds are on/off by default (you can do that on the Settings>Features page today). We also are just trying to figure out whether we should tweak the way audio works at all, where today it plays a noise even when minimized and even when you're actively chatting with someone (so it's more than just audio played when chat is in the background).
If anyone has thoughts on that, let me know!
Ning Product Manager
I was going to suggest a very distinctive sound for a PM, but if you're going to let new PM's pop out, then that wouldn't be necessary. I think popping out is more of an "attention getter" than a sound anyway.
Great john s.!!!

YES I think NCs still need to be able to control whether sounds are on/off by default
Ok this looks like a pretty good start to redesigning the chat.I think this is what we have been waiting for ...Some things are worth the wait :)
To answer your questions:
Thank you, Evan! Oh, this is going to get tons of responses! Previously, chat wasn't important to me (at my old network), but I do see it as a necessity now, and the need to totally revamp it.
I was about to ask here if anyone knew how to customize the current chat to match our networks a few weeks back. I agree with with Cherry this needs to be part of the overhaul. Having a dedicated page may also prove useful to prevent distractions as Tim notes.
I'll get out of the way here, since I know there will be a crush of replies. Keep up the good work, Ning.
