Code for turning Center column of 3 column layout into an addition two columns

Ok, so even I find that title a little confusing.

Here's what I want to do.

My site is set up as a 3 column and uses custom coding. I want to be able to place two aspects side by side in the center column (which is sooo wide).  For example I'd like to place Groups/Members' Blogs side by side.

I don't want to make the entire home page 4 columns, I just want to be able to place these two aspects side by side.

Here's the site -

Thanks,

Christine
