I have managed to get the email addresses to carry my domain, but the email addresses assigned to members is very complicated like 2kjgf86754ghf764fb764@mydomain.com.  Is there any way to get simpler assigned email addresses for members, so that they can remember easily?

not that I know of, for one, and two, it isn't going to work with your custom domain name. you are going to have to put the following code into your custom code box (replace all instances of yoursite with the correct names.

<script type="text/javascript">if (typeof(x$) != 'undefined') {var oldHref = x$('#xg_profiles_settings_email_show').attr('href');if (oldHref) {var oldValue = x$('#xg_profiles_settings_email_show').html();var newValue = oldValue.replace('yoursite.com','yoursite.ning.com');x$('#xg_profiles_settings_email_show').html(newValue);var newHref = oldHref.replace('yoursite.com','yoursite.ning.com');x$('#xg_profiles_settings_email_show').attr('href',newHref);}}</script>

The reason this doesn't work is because you haven't purchased email services for your members from your registrar. If you use GoDaddy, it's about 2.99 PER ADDRESS A MONTH. If you have 500 members, that's 1500 dollars a month just for custom emails to send pics and vids to! YIKES!  I brought up an idea in this discussion and was told there that Ning is working on a solution for it.

Hi John,

Making these email addresses easy to remember would also make them guessable, which might allow spammers to inundate your network with ads.

PS David, that code is only necessary where an NC is using email at their mapped domain. If they don't want to use email, then the emailing in addresses will work, depending on your DNS configuration.

Thanks,

Phil

Phil,

I'm not following you here, can you elaborate? This is for photo uploading, correct? If it is for receiving email, HOW do we do THAT? The way I understood this situation (for pics and vids) is if you have a custom domain above and beyond the original networkname.ning.com, then it will not work unless you have email service from your registrar. Since he listed his 3 websites as having custom domains above, I wanted to get that info to him to get it set up.

Are you saying that we CAN use the membernam123@yourdomain.com if you set the DNS up differently? If so, can you explain what to do? There are MANY people who would love to do this.

If I totally misunderstood what this is about, and we can receive email on our networks, I'd like to know how to do that too, because if this is so, in 3+ years, I have NEVER seen it!

Thank you for all of your help,

David

Hi David,

If you've set up an A Record for your domain that points to Ning's IP address, and you've set up a CNAME to the network url and you haven't set up an MX record for the domain that points to your registrar's email system, then xyz123@example.com emails will flow through to Ning and add by email will work correctly for your mapped domain.

Cheers,

Phil

ok i havent a clue what you are talking about LOL! HOW do you guys retain the amount of information you know? It's just amazing.

This is done on the registrar end i am assuming? can you lay it out for me in a little simpler terms (or link me to a walkthru)? I use GoDaddy if that helps.

Thank you,

Dave

Hi Dave,

Yes, this is all done via your registrar. The quick rule of thumb is that if you're using email at your domain already, then you can't use Add By Email without the js hack you posted above. If you're not using email at your domain, then you should be able to delete your existing MX record and Add By Domain will work.

Thanks,
Phil

okay phil, you just gave me something to go educate myself on, if I have any further questions i'll post here, thanks for the heads up!

Dave

Also, Phil, combined with my last is...how does this hack relate with the replace add by phone hack? Is it in addition to it?

Again, just to be clear, I'm attempting to keep my email at my root server, point the domain to ning, and also still offer the add by phone feature, so long as i can do so via a sister domain name, or a sub domain in my dns zone. what do you think? ty.

Hi jz,

That will probably work. You'll still want to use the javascript hack to update the email address that members see to point to the new domain for email.

Thanks,
Phil

Thanks. Phil. So, to be clear, are you saying to use both hacks? The replace add by phone hack and this hack, above? ty.

Or, is this the same hack? I'll go look;-) ty.

looks like 2 sep hacks, so if u get a minute, maybe u can clarify, Phil.

Again... there's a replace add by phone hack, then there's this one, above, which looks similar to me, in that it offers a way to have the emails go to the ning network using the mydomain.ning.com method.

Reminder: my goal is to use a sep domain, as you replied it might work, above. I'm wondering if i need both hacks.

the replace add by phone hack has addPhone language in the script; this one doesn't. thanks! -jz
