Please can we lose the word "Banned" for members who - for whatever reason are suspended from the network temporarily. I run a monetized network and sometimes members who don't subscribe following the trial period have their membership suspended (I'm very patient and normally send at least two polite reminders to subscribe). Many eventually contact me and re-subscribe; however, when some members find out they're "Banned" - they usually perceive this as an affront and don't bother contacting me to re-subscribe, and frankly I can't blame them. It's essential that we, as network owners, have the option to have the term "Deactivated" or "Suspended" applied to members, as the notification they receive still uses the term "Banned", which does have pejorative connotations. I've changed all instances of "Banned" (and derivatives) using the Language Editor, but some elements are still clearly beyond our control. This a must fix - can Ning get onto this and remedy the situation please! Thanks.

So it's funny you bring this up. We agree — so much so that we actually changed the word from "ban" to "suspend" back in November of 2009 (http://blog.ning.com/2009/11/goodbye-banning-hello-better-member-ma...). Can you clarify where you're still seeing it? Are you using a language other than English-US?

Permalink Reply by Angela Pifer on April 19, 2013 at 5:10pm Hi Evan,
I was just about to post about this topic and see that it has been discussed here - so here is my two cents:
You may have changed the 'ban' to 'suspend' in the main box message, yet the URL still lists 'banned' - I second what Andrew is saying. I run a 28 Day Challenge a few times a year and I have a large group of past participants who rejoin - I get many, many emails asking why they have been banned - they see this as an attack on their actions - that they did something wrong to be suspended/ banned from the site. I don't need my customers feeling this way. I WANT them to come back and rejoin.
I appreciate that we have the option to suspend for spam (this should read 'suspended') but we also need to have the option to remove a profile (this should simply read 'you no longer have access to this site. Please contact the administrator....) and please change the word 'banned' in the URL. They do see it - 'banned' is used in almost every email I get regarding this issue.

Permalink Reply by Patrick Chappelle on April 19, 2013 at 6:48pm Angela, this is a very old discussion. Evan no longer works here. Your best bet would be to start your own discussion about the matter, since no one at Ning is going to come through and read this old post.
Permalink Reply by Deann on February 22, 2011 at 9:20pm Yes, this has been changed last year to suspended, but I still have a problem with how this is set up. I would like to completely delete some of those records instead of having a long suspended list. Also, it takes me forever to see who left because the list is not sorted by the date they left. Can this be improved please? :)
Thanks,
Deann
Permalink Reply by Bev Hammond on February 22, 2011 at 9:36pm I totally agree with you. I cringe whenever I see the "Ban from Network" as my only possible selection for deleting a profile from someone who isn't eligible for an actual membership in our group (i.e., is out of our area) or hasn't renewed their membership by not paying their dues. Why can't we, as administrators, simply "delete" a profile? Sometimes that would be useful for those members who have forgotten their passwords (*!!*) too. When trying to help them, I've gotten caught in a loop where they can't log on to retrieve their password, but when I try to work around that, I keep getting the message that they already have a profile. What I really need is to let them start all over again!

Permalink Reply by Bev Hammond on February 22, 2011 at 10:04pm Oops--I stand corrected. I just double-checked the moderation controls and found that "ban" had indeed been "banned" in favor of "suspend" and "delete." Much better and more useful!
Now if you could just fix the Ning calendar so that it shows what our members (and this Administrator) want to see on it. I reported my complaints in a Discussion on Saturday, 2-19.

Permalink Reply by Andrew G Bell on February 23, 2011 at 12:55am I'll join you in the corrected corner Bev. It's actually a big improvement - there was something pejorative about being "Banned" and Suspended is much better (although Subscribed is even better!).

Permalink Reply by Joan on February 23, 2011 at 4:48am I’ve been just now reading your problem about the ‘bann’ issue.
The word title is changed for some time now.
The ability to completely delete the name and account is also fixed now. The Ning team has gotten it as we all wished to have it.
Look into your MyNetwork/Dashboard/Members/Moderation and see into the tabs that are Members; Administrators; Banned; Left
When you use the drop down menu for the members in “Banned” you can now delete all and anyone there.
The same with the tab “Left”.
Those one who took off on their own accord.
When all persons are deleted from Banned and Left tabs by you, the tabs themselves disappear and you just have on the page Members and Administrators tabs showing.
Did you read here yet...
