We are happy to announce a new feature that allows you to make corrections and other copy editing changes to member content. This has been a huge ask from many Network Creators; to effectively manage your Ning Network, you need the ability to make copy edits and corrections to content your members create. Making such changes has been a very tedious process in the past. Your only options were to either contact and ask your member to edit the content (potentially a time consuming process) or delete the content (too strict in most cases).

We’ve made this easier with a new feature launch. You can now conveniently make appropriate edits to the content created by members on your network, including: Photos, Videos, Events, Blog posts and Forum discussions. You also have the ability to edit comments that members make to forum discussions.

When you visit a member content page now, you will see the option to Edit it, just like you see today when you create your own content. When you click to edit, you’ll see the content edit page where you can make the appropriate changes and save them.

As a Network Creator you also have the ability to give this permission to your trusted administrators or moderators, if you wish. To do this just go to “My Network” and click the “Controls” link under Content section in the left hand navigation. On this page there are two check box options under “Edit Content Permissions”:

  • Allow administrators to edit member content
  • Allow moderators to edit member content they are moderating

These options enable administrators or moderators to edit member content respectively. Please note that you have to explicitly enable these settings since they are not on by default.

EditContent-Controls

We hope you find this feature useful in managing your Network more effectively. Please stay tuned as we push out even more changes to give you better control over your Network and your content.

I'm impressed about the amount of new stuff you guys put out these days. Another very helpfull feature has seen the light.

Thank you Ning, platform is just getting better and better each day.
Wow this is spooky, I logged in today to try and pick other Creators brains for ideas on how they manage their forums without the ability to edit posts and Ning have now provided the very tool I need, brilliant! thank you Ning
This is wonderful! Thanks guys! :)
SUPER!! Thanks so much.
Hi Junaid, please notice this thread too ... Evan replied I should raised a point here too: if NC can re-edit discussions - why can't member re-edit their own replies? There is a community software system which provides an additional note if someone changed a reply - equal if it is a member of admin of a group / network - please read here
This is great! Absolutely a big step in the right direction. Thanks Ning!

But why are we still restricted access to the privacy settings?

Often people upload content that has no relation to the subject of the network and if they want to change the privacy settings they have to go through their photos one by one and edit the privacy settings for each photo. Imagine doing that on just 10 photos. That's 4 clicks per photo = 40 clicks.

Ning had the feature for members to choose privacy settings during upload back in 2008 but it was removed by mistake (according to Ning help center) in 2009. Still it has not been added back, so why still restrict access to the privacy buttons even in this update?

Here I propose a solution for NCs to change these settings using the "Flag" feature. Product manager Evan thought it was a great idea, like myself.

If you would like the ability to administer the content people upload "off topic" to your network without having to actually delete it (which Ning says in this release also is "too strict") then please support the idea in the thread.
Often members upload private photos they wanna share with their friends on the network, do you really want to delete these photos just cause you can't change the privacy settings to private? Don't you want members to engage with other members on a personal level? Does this not hook them into your network?
HOW "FLAG" COULD BECOME ADMIN TOOL TO SHIFT CONTENT FROM PUBLIC TO ...
I totally agree with you, Brian. We need more improvements from NING and not only a simple - now we can edit members content solution. I don't like to be a member of a network where the NC's has so much power without public control options and the hint with different kind of privacy setting is really useful. If a member would like to share photos with his friends only but for my own as responsible person of the complete network it will be helpful to switch member content to a different privacy options. Now I can flag content on my network - it will be visible for the member and the admins only - but there will be maybe that I can choose that the friends of this member can view his photos - but it will not be visible for all members.
The mouse over feature must go now.
We don't need the mouse over that trigger edit. We have a link that says: Edit comment

Hello, when a video is embed by a member, the user that just posted the video AND the administrator of the network cannot click play.
Because the mouse over feature trigger the edit feature.

The best way to show this is with an example. Here is a video. I embed it. After I click save, I cannot read it. Why ? Because mouse over trigger the edit feature.
If you are the admin of this forum, you and I (author of that comment), we will not be able to read this YouTube video.

All other members can. But you the Admin cannot. When I (who posted this video) or you (the admin with edit power) click PLAY, the edit content mouse over yellow is triggered

You see this video above ?
I who just posted it, I cannot play it. Unbeleivable. When I mouse over it to click play, that triggers the edit yellow thing and switches the damn thing to edit

May I also signal a bug on safari with video embed ?
When you post a video like I just did on safari, and you click save, the video is not visible right away.
The area where the video is embed is blank. You have to leave the page and return to see it.
That behavior only happens for the user posting the Youtube (or any other video) embed.

There as so many bugs I find on Ning, but I don't have the time really to signal all of them

.
I, who just posted this video, had to wait 15 minutes, for the Edit time to pass, to be able to play this video. Because, before that, mouse over triggered the yellow box and the edit feature.
Hi ragots,

- for an admin (if they have the permission) "edit comment" button is available so they don't need to rely on mouse over behavior to make edits.
- for a member though, the edit functionality (15min) is on mouse over, which is existing behavior. i see how this can be problematic where the content takes over the entire box. i'll follow up at our end to look into this.
Oh my God, are you serious ?
I thought I made myself clear. I'm sorry.
You are an admin of this forum. Can you read the video above ? No. You cannot.
Why ? Because when you try to click on PLAY, it triggers the edit.
That's what I am saying. This is very frustrating to take time, to explain something and come back here and realize you've been taken for an idiot.

I'm saying, please, get rid of that mouse over thing because we don't need it. The edit comment function is enough.
I would like some answers from Ning on this one.
