I am running a Christian music site Indie Gospel Artists at http://indiegospel.org
I have the Livewired "Jukebox" application, and Ning Pro for the branded players and upload capability.
What is missing is the functionality to sell downloads, or track song plays. Allowing artists to embed links to their stores would also be an improvement, similar to ReverbNation's players.
Also, a Facebook application which would make the songs available on Facebook, similar to ReverbNation's "My Band" application.
Another improvement would be the ability to relay a playlist to MSN Live 360 Internet Radio, which requires a fixed IP and port number.
It is hard for a Ning based music site to compete against external music sites that offer these features to their artists. It would also create a revenue stream, to help pay the bills.
Is Ning ever going to enhance the players, or is there a 3rd party developer who is able (with the limited API access that Ning provides) to incorporate advanced customizations to the players?
If not, I will have to move elsewhere and have a custom script built.
