I know Laura mentioned about a month ago Facebook Connect is something that Ning is looking into.

I wanted to throw my two cents into this, since I feel there'd be a lot of benefit to having Facebook Connect functionality available in our networks. For instance, we run a 3000+ member fan page on Facebook and being able to integrate their experience through FB Connect would go a long way towards helping build bridges between the two spaces.

Also, I saw a short video from the guys at NingMods showing how FB Connect could be implemented as part of a network on Ning:
http://getsatisfaction.com/ning/topics/add_facebook_connect6
Is this something they were able to do b/c of a particular way in which NingMods is set up that is unique to it?

Hey Jason!

If we were looking to allow for sign up with Facebook Connect, that's not something that can be done via OpenID. They're two separate systems.

We're working on adding Facebook integration features, so stay tuned!

Quite a few of my friends that have been invited to one of my alumni sites on Ning have mentioned that they don't want to "sign up for another site"... Not because they don't want to join, just because they don't want to remember another login/password combo and have to keep up with status updates, etc. So I think if we had FB connect and all the status updates were with that, the issue would be resolved. This is the main reason people get Myspace/Facebook/Twitter overload. If the sites were somehow combined, they could use the best of each site and no one would have to choose which one has the most of what, or duplicate content and friends lists.

Here is a list of the number of friends I have on ONE site who are ALSO my friends on another site:

Out of 219 friends on Facebook: 82 are on Myspace, 16 are on Twitter, 8 are on My Yearbook, 3 are on Youtube, 14 are on Ning, and 3 are on Flickr.

Out of 176 friends on Myspace: 82 are on Facebook, 13 are on Twitter, 8 are on My Yearbook, 4 are on Youtube, 13 are on Ning, and 1 is on Flickr.

Out of 56 friends on Youtube: 3 are on Facebook, 4 are on Myspace, and 2 are on Flickr.

Out of 47 friends on Twitter: 16 are on Facebook, 13 are on Myspace, 3 are on My Yearbook, 2 are on Ning, and 1 is on Flickr.

Out of 37 friends on Ning: 14 are on Facebook, 13 are on Myspace, and 2 are on Twitter.

Out of 20 friends on My Yearbook: 8 are on Facebook, 8 are on Myspace, 3 are on Twitter, and 1 is on Facebook.

Out of 7 friends on Flickr: 3 are on Facebook, 5 are on Myspace, 1 is on Twitter, 1 is on My Yearbook, and 2 are on Youtube.

Now, it may be that some of them are ON these sites but not my friend, but it's going to be a very low occurence if so. On each site, their information has also pretty much been pretty closely duplicated. If you guys could somehow find a way to be the "bridge" between all the sites, I have a feeling you'd jump to the #1 spot. (A side note, it seems as though My Yearbook may have found some way to do this?)
BTW just noticed a typo:( Out of 20 friends on My Yearbook, the last one should have been Ning.
*BUMP* In need of FaceBook integration.
IMO, the top priority for facebook integration is sign-up/sign-in. If members from FB and Myspace and Twitter could just click one button and then confirm integration like sites like the huffington post, current tv, etc. do, NING networks would begin to pull members over to their sites in droves!

Ideally FB connection would include a way to link/embed/merge photos, blogs, status updates, and even friends and groups. Those are far down the list compared to sign-up integration though... that's the #1 priority!
same here would be good to use this. This way it would be a click away for my members on FB to connect to my ning site cos i have been having trouble for fb members to join us... especially u know now a days people are just lazy to sign up or too busy on fb i have a group there for my online radio and i would like to see this on soon!... anyway i hope this will help us and make ning a bigger greater place for all of us! :-) Thanks ning again! :-)
hey dj, haven't you heard? we will have this coming july 20th.
Having a full integration with facebook and Twitter means, NING will have Half or 1/5th the customers/ members FB and Twitter have which will eventually grow Ning Paid Subscribers after July 20.

At the same time, Photo tagging on NING feature as well would be something we're looking forward.

I believe Ning can even compete FB.
Any updates when new members will be able to sign in with Facebook?
july 20th, or immediately after.
I have to agree with more than 40k+ fans Sign in/authenticate using Facebook Connect would be great.
Did I miss the announcement about Ning integrating with Facebook Connect so that our Ning members can sign-up or sign-in with their Facebook logins? That would be so much more user friendly than requiring them to create yet another account on yet another service. Also great would be integration with Twitter and LinkedIn for the same purpose as there are many people who actively use Twitter or LinkedIn but not Facebook.
