Hello NC's,

Did anyone notice that Facebook announced today that all FB pages will be converted to the new timeline layout by the end of March? How do you feel about this and do you feel this will affect your brand or the layout of your page? Just curious... I like the timeline for personal pages, but for companies and brands... not so much. Please share your thoughts or what you're doing to go through this change.

Hi,

Yes, I jumped on the early upgrade option to get ahead of the curve. It was cool- a lot more media intensive. My Ning site shares well on it. I can use it more along the intended constraints of the Facebook network, so gives me a place to be more natural than mainly professional, and not worry so much about promoting my network to people I know. In turn, I have more flexibility to operate comfortably within the constraints of my Ning network.

Going through to clean up my timeline was labor intensive. I am a light FB user right now, mainly having set aside my account a few years ago to support a social media campaign when the time comes to release my network, so I had to spend about a day on it. Moderate to heavy users will likely have to spend substantially more time to get their pages how they want them.

However, the process wasn't that bad, and I'd say even a bit fun for a one time thing.

Best,

Anthony

Thx for the feedback Anthony, and sorry for the delay, I didnt get a notification on my own forum, weird, lol. Anyhoo, I do appreciate your insight. At first glance I dont like timeline for pages, I really love it for personal FB profiles, but for pages it's a bit of a transition for me. And youre right, it will take some time to customize it, I guess which is why I dont like it b/c I happen to be opening a second network this week, so the additional work is not fun. I do however like the way it integrates with my NIng network, makes my activity feed look snazzy. We shall see how it goes, ultimately all the changes on FB really benefit those with brands or businesses, so we should use it to our advantage ;)

Yes I upgraded early too:) I must say that for the pages I have, I think it will work out well. Here are some samples (sorry, there's a lot!), and reasons why I think it will work out well (or not) for each page (or group of pages).

My Autobiography Pages:
Before The Wolf Came: A Former Foster Child's Heritage
The Wolf Outside My Window: A Former Foster Child's Journey To Adul...
The Peacock's Cry: A Former Foster Child's Struggle To Find Her Place
Bruised Wings
I think it will be useful for ALL of these pages, because since these are autobiographical, I can sort all the posts by date.

My Pet Pages:
Pantera: The Queen Of The Castle
Ninja: The Easy-Going Kitty That Fetches
Chilly: The Orange-Eyed Goober Kitty
Thunder: The Cat With A Heart Of Gold
Domino: The Cute Spotted Kitten
Bessie: The Sweet Moo Cat
I think pet pages should be set up chronologically just like people profiles, so you can show their lives over the course of time:)

My Alumni Pages:
Collinsville High School
Northwest Classen High School
I actually added some posts to the Northwest Classen High School page to test this out, and it really does work well! I added points in history for the school, but this could work just as well for a business, IMHO. At some point I'll add things to the Collinsville one as well.

My Business/Nonprofit/Cause Pages:
Story's Ink
Sharing The American Dream With Others
Pet Owners Resource Center
Pets Need To Be Loved Too
To be quite honest, I haven't tried out the features in relation to these yet, but I think I'll find many uses in the future:)

My Network's Page:
The Human Touch
I think there are many (as of yet untried) ways this new timeline view could REALLY spice up our networks and tie them together with our Facebook pages. Aside from the obvious (sharing your content from one to the other), you could use this to keep track of your site's history, highlight key people on your network, celebrate milestones, and more.

I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with!
