Normally with something like this a title would be added to it in the code so when you hover over it it tells the user what it is, like a little tool tip. This morning, out of the blue, I got a message that I had reached a limit of 10,000 members and I needed to upgrade. I have over 16,000 members. This is the first notification I have ever received. 10 minutes later 6000 members were totally gone from my network. What happened??? This is crazy. A policy that I've never heard of suddenly implemented? How about I would have gotten notification when I was at member #9995? Why wait several years and then today implement a policy AND an action immediately?

Tip: PROFILE THEMEShttps://creators.ning.com/forum/topics/tip-profile-themes2020-05-21T10:52:08.000Z2020-05-21T10:52:08.000ZBizzhttps://creators.ning.com/members/Bizz208

Here is something I've been working on and it's something for your members to be able to choose a theme for thier profile. They can choose one when signing up or from thier profile page. Once the tip is ready to share all the code will be there so you can add or edit the css design for your own ones. This is still being developed but thought I would share how it's going so far. Next updates for this are for an image carousel under the choose theme options and then more options for layout type.

Anyways here is a video showing how it works

Ning 3.0 Group members CSV filehttps://creators.ning.com/forum/topics/ning-3-0-group-members-csv-file2018-05-31T03:10:07.000Z2018-05-31T03:10:07.000ZAlliancehttps://creators.ning.com/members/Alliance

I can't believe I am posting a tip/trick as if I am a web developer but here is something I think Creators will find useful. Soon Ning will solve this issue but until then here is a way out.

until NING solves a very needed issue of our group members list.

Currently we do not have a way to get the members list from a specific group so you can email them seperately via another system such as Mailchimp.

Members CSV File

The first step is to download your members CSV file from your Member Management section of the Admin Portal.

Make sure your settings is on Active members as I have made this mistake in the past.

Your next step is to look in the bottom right hand side near your pagination and you will see the link for your CSV file to be retrieved.

Once Ning emails you your file, open it to Microsoft Excel.

Group Members

Your next step is to go to the group you want to get the list of and go to the Members management of the Group.

There will be no CSV file in here so you are going to have to drag and over the text of each page and copy once it is highlighted.

Fortunately this will past into excel. Go back to your Excel file and click the second tab.

Copy your group members results in cell A1. Great that part is done but yeah I know, no email addresses, hold on.

VLook up

You will have to do a Data search called a vlookup to compare data from Table 1 to give you results in Table 2. Here is what the formula will look like =VLOOKUP(C2,memberdata!A1:M1066,3,FALSE)

Don't get scared as microsoft has a wizard to help you with this. Erase the last two columns of Role and Joined if you wish, as they are just a distraction to our process.

Click in the row after your last column Header and name that column Email and click in row 2 below it.

Now lets start the magic. Go to Formulas tab and then Lookup and References. Scroll down until you see VLookUP and the dialogue wizard will open.

Select cell C2 from your Groups List as this will represent your usernames unless you made username another column and row for some reason.

for the second answer to the wizard go to the memberdata Tab and select your whole table that NING provided.

Your third answer is 3 as it represents the column where your email addresses are at.

Last answer is False. I dont understand it JUST TRUST ME. False

Hit enter and Bam there you go!!! and email associated with a Group username.

From there, Drag the Formula Down or double click the bottom right of your cell and excel will populate the rest of the results.

Now from here, yall should be able to handle it. Save as CSV

Export members List from 3.0https://creators.ning.com/forum/topics/export-members-list-from-3-02018-05-26T22:54:00.000Z2018-05-26T22:54:00.000ZAlliancehttps://creators.ning.com/members/Alliance

Can I please have directions on how I can export my member list into a csv file on 3.0.

I would like to implement my group members with Mailchimp and I hope the file will say what group members are in.

I really want to know also why was this not installed before as you know from 2.0 this was a need by networks.

The email contact list belongs to us the creators not NING.

Display more members in each page?https://creators.ning.com/forum/topics/display-more-members-in-each-page2017-12-06T00:46:50.000Z2017-12-06T00:46:50.000ZMartin Buzzhttps://creators.ning.com/members/MartinBuzz

I have been looking for this feature over and over...

¿Anyone could guess a hack to display more than 24 members in each page of members?

That would be great for my community. I've shared many ways of building member maps over the years, but I seem to be getting a lot of questions about it lately so I figured it was time for an update. Today I am going to show you the most rapid method for creating a member map that I have found to date. If you know of a faster way, please share. Here are a few of my previous posts:

How to Map Your Members on a Ning Network

3.0 Tip: How To Map Your Ning Network Members -Updated-

3.0 Mapping Tip: Make Your Member Map Responsive

Here is the short version of how I do it now:

I use the Geocode Awesome addon for Google Drive.

Export your member data from your community as CSV

Import it into Google Drive and open it as spreadsheet with addon installed to sheets

  - i usually make a copy of the memberdata.csv and name it GEOmemberdata and strip the email column out and other irrelevant columns the geocode the geo copy..

Combine the Location column with Country to create a new cell called "Full Address" in the sidebar (it will do it for you)

Geocode that column - it will generate two new columns for Latitude and Longitude and may take as much as an hour

NOTE: While it geocodes your locations, leave the page open and do not switch to a new tabs to do other things....let it run... if you have a lot of members, watch a movie while it runs or it will stop and hang...best to use in Chrome

Then you'll be presented with an option to create a heat map from the sheet and you have two choices

1) Either export the sheet as a CSV file to import into other map platforms like Carto.com or Mapbox

2) Generate your map using Awesome table...

Either one you choose, you'll want to edit the HTML of the infobox.

I usually export the CSV file first before generating the heatmap because it adds extra filters to the sheet when you generate the map.. I do this so that I can import the CSV into Carto.com to create a more robust map like this:

I hope this helps with you member mapping questions. If you ever need advise or help with any aspect of your community, simply drop me a line here and we'll get it moving in the right direction, together... Have a great weekend!

What a special Member can DO?https://creators.ning.com/forum/topics/what-a-special-member-can-do2017-03-16T21:19:06.000Z2017-03-16T21:19:06.000ZFabricio Giugnihttps://creators.ning.com/members/FabricioGiugni

Hi there,

I know that there is a Member Categories. The question is simple. If I create a "PRO" Categories What my "PRO" Member can Do? I meam like a special function that no "Pro" can't do.

like a Special way to rate other member or a special way to like te photos?

Why people want to be "PRO" Member?

Clean, Robust, Filterable Community Member Directoryhttps://creators.ning.com/forum/topics/clean-robust-filterable-community-member-directory2016-12-11T02:08:22.000Z2016-12-11T02:08:22.000Z⚡JFarrow⌁https://creators.ning.com/members/JFarrow

You can make a really nice member directory from your exported Members Data, but it requires quite a few steps. Mostly because(If you've worked with that CSV or spreadsheet data you know that) the member profile avatars are not provided in the member export. So you must get these by building a scraper with a tool like import.io.

The Short Version

The first steps are similar to those when making a member map, as shown in my previous Member Map Making tips. Export your member data and pull it into Google Spreadsheets. Then run scraper to get profile photos. Add them to the sheet in a new column, Apply a cards layout from Awesome Table to the sheet along with some custom CSS. Then you embed it whereever you like. Filters are customizable too.

Member directories can come in many shapes and sizes. You or I can make this anyway you like. Is something like this of any interest to you guys? If so, I could either offer it as a service or explain the long version.

And today I noticed that the areas under posts for attachments might now be as attractive as they should be. In fact, maybe the default word attachments isn't quite what it should be- ie it should be Downloads. Preferably a place where you can simply update at will and the page you created will show live when you refresh the page on the network.

You can do this in many ways and you might be asking yourself "Why can't I just upload the page using a text box or file manager?" The short answer to this is because you will then have to open up that Getting Started page and replace the LOOOOOONG Url everytime you make a change to your page. I would either suggest placing the page inside your Public Dropbox folder or on a subdomain that you created inside your domain host. When I began, I used my dropbox, which gave me a URL like https://dl.dropbox.com/u/49sdg/my-file.html but now I use a subdomain like files.landsurveyorsunited.com/my-file.html

Step 5: Iframe that page into the page you just created, Name that page you added Getting Started or similar and set it to Full Width (hide sidebar). Also set it to members only.

Step 6: Go to language editor and after choosing language, search for the following

Welcome to %2$s! There are %1$s simple things you can do to get started:

and replace the words only with something more well, welcoming and provide the link to the page you just made. NEVER replace anything with %$ or similar.

This is what I replaced mine with:

Welcome to %2$s! We are happy that you joined the community and look forward to all that you have to share with us. Take a look at the getting started guide here: http://landsurveyorsunited.com/getstartedlsu There are %1$s simple things you can do to get started:

What this does is modifies the existing email which is automatically sent to a member once they have been approved to join your network. This new page that you directed them to should have the language translation installed.

I hope you enjoyed learning the fruits of my labor and find this tutorial helpful when getting serious about growing your community. It has worked wonderfully with mine and with time, you will get it just right!

Step 2: Install language translation into this page, so that it can be read by anyone. Images containing text cannot be read by everyone. Install it at the top.

Step 2 in detail. Install Google Translate or Microsoft Translateinto the top of your Getting Started Page that you are Iframing into the new page on your site. Remember that this is a single web page with all of the information that you plan to tell your new members upon being accepted to your community. If you run an international community like I do it is very important to use clear-as-possible-language so that it is easily translated. That page you just made should be either placed on a server or a Public Dropbox folder, so that you can easily make changes to the page and replace the existing version of the page at will.

Step 3: Create a new page by going to yournetwork.com/pagesand click Add New. This page will be a Members Only Access Page

Step 3 is simple. Go to yournetwork.com/pagesand click Add New. Set that new page to Members Only and 100% width. Click the text editor so that you are seeing the HTML view of the editor. You're going to also want to place a bit of text before the iframe so that visitors to you /pages page will know what that page is about. Paste the following code in to Iframe that new page you made into it.

Save.

PART 3 Here

How-to Hack The Welcome Email Part 1https://creators.ning.com/forum/topics/how-to-hack-the-welcome-email-part-12012-10-13T03:19:04.000Z2012-10-13T03:19:04.000Z⚡JFarrow⌁https://creators.ning.com/members/JFarrow

One of the first problems that Ning creators run into when they start getting serious about their community is sending a welcome email to every new member that joins. Somewhere along the line they start to get the feeling that someone out there has to have figured out a way to automate this process as it is the most time consuming aspect of daily community management. In fact, back in 2007, it was the very reason why i came to this forum. Today I am coming to you as that person who has figured out an automated solution.
The Short Version

Step 1: Create a responsive web page containing the content that you would usually include inside a welcome email to a new member. Give directional advise regarding where to go to do what. Do not include a lot of images (and you'll see why).

Step 2: Install language translation into this page, so that it can be read by anyone. Images containing text cannot be read by everyone. Install it at the top.

Step 3: Create a new page by going to yournetwork.com/pages and click Add New. This page will be a Members Only Access Page

Step 4: Upload the page you made to your server (or public dropbox public folder) and get the URL. Preferably a place where you can simply update at will and the page you created will show live when you refresh the page on the network.

Step 5: Iframe that page into the page you just created, Name that page you added Getting Started or similar and set it to Full Width (hide sidebar). More in the Long Version

Step 6: Go to language editor and after choosing language, search for the following

Welcome to %2$s! There are %1$s simple things you can do to get started:

and replace the words only with something more well, welcoming and provide the link to the page you just made. NEVER replace anything with %$ or similar.

Step 7: Enjoy the ability to edit a welcome message at will and when is automatically sent to a member once they are approved.

NOTE: my welcome message is for my members-only, so i am providing a longer more explained version over the next couple of days to help those who do not have 5 years to wait, like i did.

The Detailed Version Part One Step One

Create a responsive web page containing the content that you would usually include inside a welcome email to a new member.

A well designed single web page will be a responsive one. A responsive layout is one that adjusts its own dimensions depending on the device that the user is using. So with that said, your web page could just as easily be made into an HTML page on your network's mobile version. The content should be purposeful and guiding, written from the point of view that you bring to the community, as the creator. It should explain the mission of their new community and invite them to weigh in throughout your network by creating the links that lead to where you want them to go and briefly explain the purpose of each area of the site. Keep it simple, to the point and and don't go overboard.

For example, here is one of the paragraphs from my GS guide.

From there, head over to either our +Curate or Explore page and find topics, meet other professionals and/or upload some of your own content to the network, such as photos and videos. Every member will also join a unique combination of group forums based on their location, types of equipment they use and the type of surveying they are familiar with. Run a quick search here and join the groups which apply to you. When starting discussions, try to remember to post in the group forum which best applies to your question in order to get the most replies. If you are looking for inspiration on a topic to write about, check out our Land Surveying A to Z page and pick one, or suggest a term to be added.

Its getting late here so i will follow up with Steps 2-4 over the next couple of days and beginning of next week.

Be patient with it and don't try to do all of this in one night. Remember that the point of this is to give you a welcome message combined with a Getting Started Guide that you can update whenever you see fit, so as your network changes, so too will your message.

Just went through some of my members and discovered some interesting patterns that helped me remove a bunch of spammers, here's my suggestions and tips from the experience.

PREVENTION

Tip #1: DO NOT have contests that involve only people who are members. I ran a few photo contests and discovered that a ton of members existed only to vote for their friend and then were never back on again, they likely aren't even interested in what the site is about. So find an alternative for contests. Perhaps pick the finalists yourself and then use a poll from http://www.polldaddy.com to allow anyone to submit a vote for the winner.

Tip #2: Use the Captcha, have specific profile questions and make uploading a photo mandatory.

FINDING SPAMMERS: Browsing members and finding discrepancies

Look for any of the following:

Photos opposite to the gender listed.

Photos that are TOO NICE, they are likely stock photos. One's with a clean profile image that is crisp or has a white or out of focus background. Over time, you'll get an eye for catching these types of profile pictures.

Photos that aren't of people. Products, plants, etc.

Members from New York. A lot of spammers use this as their location.

If your site is somewhat gendered (i.e. mostly men or mostly women) you can search the least common gender and will often find spammers in there.

Look for common profile question mistakes that spammers make, for example I have a question like "who is your hoop mamma or papa?" which means, "who got you interested in this hobby?" and spammers will often answer with Mamma or Papa because they think it is a choice between the two. Once you find common mistake answers, do an advanced search for that answer and you'll find a whack of spammers.

What are your tips and suggestions for tracking down spammers?

All the members of my social network http://criterscorner.ning.com had a member meet just this past September.
We had a very good time and planing on a reunion in July of 2012. It was nice to meet and get to know each other after years of only knowing them through the pages of our social network.

Sometimes they forget their passwords because of weak memory and sometimes they lose their passwords because of an error on Ning Platform. If they are not able to log into a site some people don't know what to do next even they can't see "forgot password" link. So my idea is very simple, send a broadcast message saying:
