There are a lot of tips and codes out there that claim to shrink or decrease the size of the gap between your header and your navigation area. I am using the newspress template and none of the code found on Creators works for me. None. Remember that I designed and placed my own header on our site. I frittered a whole evening with stuff that doesn't do anything but waste time. There is one CSS code that is already in your CSS, and merely changing the size does the trick. Mine came with this one. 70 pixels is a mammoth gap, so changed it to 5 px's. Use what you have in your CSS, change the number to fit your site.
#xg_sitename{
position:relative;
top:-70px!important;
}
