flickr can store photos for a flickr pro member - unlimited uploads - up to 20 mb each... it also has a ton more tools than Ning does natively.
The import from flickr to Ning is great - but a link back to the original flickr photo isn't included which would be really helpful... especially for viewing full size.
Has anyone seen this done in some fashion already on a ning site? I know I can add a link to the ning photo description - or embed a set from flickr into a blog...
It'd be nice if the flickr importer could grab the original flickr photo link.

Other than that I don't believe having links that takes your visitors away from your site is a good idea. It will hurt your SEO.
The idea is to have your visitors stay as long as possible on your site.
What I ran into is I have many pro photographers and a ton of amateurs in the community. Of course - we want to see "full size"... but - when am I going to run out of room on my Ning Plus account? I'm betting fairly soon based on guidelines for the accounts and such.
One of our community members is scanning in all of their b/w film negatives - and we calculated that he'd hit at least 20 gb before he barely got started... so flickr makes a ton more sense for him in the long run - BUT - we really want to showcase his work here on http://relaxedmachinery.ning.com - so what to do?
Importing is super easy from flickr - but if we pull in at full size - ouch - I just doubled the 10 gb allowance for Ning Plus. Having medium sized photos on Ning and a "view full size" which links to flickr makes more sense to me.
I'm surprised flickr doesn't force a link anyway - since they do on all of there share/embedding - integration to facebook, etc...

p.s. Please know - I totally agree with your post - I really don't want to send people away from the community on Ning at all! But... reality is reality in this situation. It's just like with music... Soundcloud just makes a lot more sense for people than the NIng music player - unless the player gets some serious updates. All in all - Ning totally rocks - and I really love it. There are just some functions that do work better elsewhere.
Permalink Reply by Scott Bishop on April 5, 2011 at 5:05pm Okay, now I see your dilemma. I have fairly close to the amount of photos on my site as well: http://surfershot.com.
Its just one of those things I'll deal with if it happens. We may just have to start paying for the Pro service if that happens which I know would suck.
The other option would be to manually delete the older photos???
Permalink Reply by Scott Bishop on April 5, 2011 at 5:28pm I know you can get your own dedicated server at a pretty reasonable price through services like Godaddy. You could go that route and see if somehow you could tie it into your ning site.
Still kind of in the "not on Ning" issue.
Maybe I should toss this into the ning feature request pile. I'll have to dig around to see how I submit it.
Basically it's almost perfect as it is... load the size of image currently loading into Ning from a flickr import - and the "view full size" just pulls up the flickr image.
Comments remain here on Ning.
