Our community is now public. That's great but it is problematic in one aspect.
We have a lot of UGC , user generated content in our resources. I'd like members to have to register inorder to download (like they have to do to upload content). This seems like a simple thing but how to do it?
Does anyone have a javascript for this? Something simple that prompts the member to the register screen pop up , if they aren't logged in.
Other suggestions welcome.

thanks ,

Hi David,
I have a similar need for members to register before they can download contents from my Ning network (nanoscienceteachers.ning.com). From a separate updated post, it sounds like you found a solution using several javascripts.
Is your solution something that you are willing to share?
Cheers,
Jia

Jia can read very well. He wants a public network AND the ability to force users to register inorder to download the valuable things he has to share. This is common practice on almost all online communities. You register to comment, upload AND especially download content. for the life of me, I don't know why Ning at a minimum doesn't have this as a setting.
Jia, find the script attached to add to your custom code. it works but at first users might have issues with cookies and being logged out. Experiment but over time it works well.

Permalink Reply by David Deubelbeiss on May 21, 2012 at 8:59pm Sorry then. Always a lot to read between the lines. We worked with this script and tested a lot. Wasn't easy but works. I find that it does get you members but engaging them to talk / discuss is another kettle of fish. That takes work and just having members to have members isn't what you might want unless you really have a lot of content to offer and / or a plan to monetize that content.

Thanks for sharing your work, David!
I'm a novice so it will take a bit of time to test your script, but I will share my experience when I have it setup properly. I agree with your sentiment that Ning is shortsighted by fixing one possible membership priviledge. Glad they at least have the vision to create this discussion forum for the entrepreneuriall creators to compensate their short coming.
much appreciated,
Jia
