HOW DO YOU ADD IMAGES TO THE NAV BAR IF POSSIBLE AND DO THEY HAVE A MAX SIZE ?

I would like to add my own images to the nav bar instead of having just text. My question is, is that possible and if so do they need to be a pacific size. Also will the text that is on the nav bar already show over the images ?

If this is possible and you can help please add any advice here and where would you place the code to make this work.
