How ya “like” me now? Like buttons now available in beta.

Update 2/4: We've enabled the inline Facebook comment box, so now when members Like something they'll be able to add a comment as well without leaving your network.

--

Today, we’ve rolled out the beta for our Ning Like Button and the Facebook Like Buttons, two features that enhance the Ning Engagement System. “Liking” is a lightweight interaction that has proved to be incredibly powerful. Now, you can bring that power to your Ning Network with either a customized Like Button, a Facebook Like Button, or both. Try them out today by going to your Beta Page.

If you enable the Ning Like button, members can “Like” photos, videos, and blog posts right from the Main Page, in addition to detail pages:

This gives people an incredibly easy way to interact with content on your network. Additionally, anything your members Like gets added to a brand-new My Likes page, which is a handy way to archive interesting stuff:

The Ning Like button comes with a ton of customization options. You can choose the default icon, as well as the default name for the feature, on the Like Button Settings page. This is also where you can re-enable “Rating” and “Favorite” if you want to hang on to those features.

If you enable the Facebook Like button, it will behave just like other Facebook Like buttons you’ve seen elsewhere. Unlike the Ning Like button, you don’t have to be a member to like something on Facebook. So the Facebook Like button is a great option if you want the maximum number of people to Like network content and make it go viral.

One awesome addition is that we hooked Facebook up to your network’s engagement system too. This means that if your content gets a ton of Facebook “Likes,” it will still rise to the top of the Leaderboards and other popularity sortings.

Naturally, you can enable the Ning Like Button, the Facebook Like Button, both, or neither. It’s up to you!

Diane,

When you remove the like buttons, do they disappear? Are you in the Theming Beta?

Thanks,

Patrick

Yes, I'm in theming beta so that's probably why.

Great, this is good news...

We also need comment button as in Facebook !!!

Definitely need a comment box!

Did anyone else's "Like" button (the Ning one not the FB one) stop working?

My worked earlier today just fine. The only thing I've done is change the text of the button back to "like!" from "props!" in the text editor.

The button appears on the screen just fine, but when it is pressed, nothing happens.

Any ideas why?

My situation has been that the Like for both Ning and facebook work, but one of my posts since I started using/testing does not have a facebook like and the ning does what yours does...nothing.  But, as stated, that is isolated and not a major concern, especially since we're in beta.

If none of your likes work, I'd say that's different than mine, insofar as it not being isolated. Maybe make sure it's not just isolated, then the issue would be better narrowed down for ning, maybe.

Mine are not isolated. None of my Ning Likes work. Not on the post, and not on a button and not when I click on a thumb on a blog post.

I just changed the word "like" to "props" then back to "like" and it appears something stopped working.

I didn't change anything else.

Earlier today it was working just fine.  Not sure what changed.

If the page hasn't finished loading completely it won't work. This isn't good on a slow connection, as most members won't know why it isn't working!

It would be good if it wasn't visible on the page until it is ready to work. (e.g. keep it hidden until the page has completely finished loading, then a line of javascript in the onLoad event makes it visible.)

That is a possibility for what was going on last night.

I was watching a Ustream channel at the same time I was testing out the "like" buttons. Perhaps, the connection couldn't handle both and it just looked like the "like" button was already loaded, but not functional.

Hmmm...

The Ning button seems to be working as designed today. I'm going to go test out your theory though by watching more Ustream.

Thanks!

Not sure what the problem was, but it seems to working ok now.

Thanks

Mine is working
where can I get this! asap :)
