I think I'm done with a network approach.  before you think I will throw a few bombs at Ning, I won't.  My site has been up for a year, pretty much as a site rather than as a network because 1 simple stumbling block cannot be overcomed.  My "site" is www.Atlscene.com  which inadvertently turned into a photo site because on the stumbling block.

By now the stumbling block has probably been solved but 6 months ago I stopped reading this forum so I don't know.

The stumbling block is comments. As I said else where, i would like people who visit my "network" to be able to comment on photos, stories,bog posts etc posted by Members- perhaps especially by using say Facebook without having to be admitted to Atlscene membership.  This as you all know is everywhere on the internet.

I would like 1,000 members and 100,000 people able to post comments in the simplest hassle free way like I myself encounter everywhere on the internet.  Looking at my site you will see photos of great events but people cannot easily post comments on if at all.

The failure maybe on My part- but on Ning I was not enarmored with the suggested third party solutions- perhaps Ning has solved this with a native application, I no longer read forums to find out what's new, I gave up a while back. So unless I have missed the solution I have decided the rather  pedestrian blog format will do more for me than a Ning network  although I'd rather have a network.  "you can't Always get what you want"- Rolling Stones.

Hey, DJ Gazzel. I can understand why you would want anonymous comments or third-party system commenting. It's something on our Product Roadmap, although it isn't ready to go just yet.

To the contrary i don't want anonymous commenting, or third party commenting.  I want Non Member commenting.  When it's ready, I will be within an arm's reach or a date certain launch would keep me otherwise it is time I created a site I can proudly ask people to visit (i currently don't). Interactivity is what i'm after not so much random members.

I have a wordpress blog that even with Askimet Spam blocker still has over 6000 Non Member Spam hits per year.  If you had a completely open comment system without some sort of filter your site would be a spam paradise.

I'm not requesting a "completely open comment system"- thousands of sites offer you for example Facebook or twitter login in order to comment.  I'm not asking for invention of a wheel-the wheel exists.

I think that Disqus, Facebook comments, and maybe Livefyre are the answers to this. Those systems incorporate popular social networking sign-in info.

Yeah, it is easy to set up a facebook commenting on a particular page, but i don't know if it is possible for the whole ning features like in your case you need people to comment on the photos.

Actually, i don't want non-members to comment on my network except in some case like, when we are giving out something to our fans visitors or something that we really like to get the public opinion.

If you want to implement facebook comment on some pages, just go to:  https://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/comments/

Follow the instuctions:
Get the code: something like this

<div id="fb-root"></div>
<script>(function(d, s, id) {
  var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];
  if (d.getElementById(id)) return;
  js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id;
  js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1&appId=398505860199";
  fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);
}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));</script>

This first part is for your Custom code: you have to change the Id, if you use this code, if you generate it yourself you will have your own Id already placed

<div class="fb-comments" data-href="http://hhiaclan.com" data-width="470" data-num-posts="2"></div>

The last part is to be placed in a text box, where you want to comment box to appear. If you use this code change the URL to you network or a particular page on your network: if you generate this code you will have to put the url of the page.

You can adjust the width & nr of posts.

I don't even think this might help you a lot, but if you are looking for a way to get non members interract, you can choose the best photos and make a page and then include the ability to use facebok to comment, you can ask non members to rate the photos or vote with comment for their favourite.

Everything about network has to do with making the best of what you have and having good ideas.

There are two ways of implementing the Fb comment box, either direct on your network or using an external server and iframing it then on your network.

Example:
Direct on your network: see it live

Or using iframe: see it live

It is possible to moderate the comments: approve before they appear, delate, hide a comment or even ban somebody from commenting. But to achieve this you have to build an app on facebook, at least a facebook page tab.

I would not talk about that now cos i dont wanna waste my time on something that am not sure if it is of any help to you. What i would like to know is if you are a starter or you really fed up and delated your members, cos i took alook and you just have 2 members.

If you are new don't give up, cos the beggining is always the hardest and nothing good comes so easy.

Finally, i agree with you on one thing, i dont see much reason for many 3rd party commentation tools, just facebook and twitter would do, if we could use them to coment on all things in out network.

You may pvt me if you find the suggestion interesting and want more infos, otherwise i will just say.

Goodluck

Please, Eric, when WILL it be ready??
And will commenting be moderated by members rather than NCs?
Cheers
SP

Sorry, but I don't have any info to share right now. Wish I did.

Ok, thanks, so frustrating that this is on the backburner.
