Hello there!
I love my ning community and am almost near the 6000 member mark now. I also run art courses and get quite a few sign ups for these courses (my current one nearly has 300 sign ups already and growing).
I was wondering if ning has any plans to improve the commenting system. I am desperately hoping for an in-line commenting system.
What I mean by that is for people to receive notifications of comments that are only relevant to their own comments instead of receiving everything that has been left in response to the whole thread.
I ask because in the current system anyone who has left a comment somewhere once, will also be notified of everything else that is posted after them, regardless of if it's relevant to the comment they've left. So they may end up with 250 comments in their inbox that have nothing to do with them. Clearly, this creates irritation and annoyance for members. Of course, they can unsubscribe from the thread, but then they will also miss out on the 1 or 2 relevant comments left for them.
At present, someone only has the option to receive either all comments, or none. I'd love it if ning could create a system whereby we could be notified only of those comments left in response to our own comment.
A brilliant example of this in-line commenting system is in action on livejournal.com.
(I am guessing however that it would take a massive overhaul of how it currently works, but I think it's a very worthy project to keep members happy).
Thanks for reading and considering this change.

Permalink Reply by Jouni Sakari Kemppinen on October 26, 2011 at 7:18am I have read this , and my brain tissue is searching for solutions . I suppose it's only one IF THEN ELSE statement to the code to be added . Well , whom should I send that knowledge ? I am thinking of that too . . . And one , or both of my friends might already have the answer , as the other already helped me install a DRAWING PLATFORM on my own site sakarilove ,that has only 16 members for time being , but is celebrating already 1 WEEK BIRTHDAY tomorrow on 27th OCTOBER , 2011 , and we do it by a CLEANUP DAY .
I do know something of programming ( the very basics ) , but I can't say what the actual code would be in the NING ENVIRONMENT , so I am calling my friends to check this discussion .
Blessings for each and every day , may the force be with you , and LONG LIVE AND PROSPER your network ☼ ♥ ☺ ♪

Permalink Reply by Kimberly Baxter Packwood on January 16, 2013 at 10:44am It is a very real issue and due to this issue, I've had several members leave my network because of it, they tell me that NING is not nearly as intuitive as other forum styles.
Since I work with my network frequently, and am a member of several other NING networks, I'm used to the formatting now. Newbies, however, easily find themselves lost and confused when trying to navigate the forums and groups. Most leave out of frustratioin.
