Sneak Peek: See Paid Access in Action
Let’s use a group for this preview. In this example I’ll be setting up Paid Access on a group that I’ll call the “Direct Marketing Group” on a site named “AAF – Silicon Valley.”
I want to point out a specific feature in this example, and that’s the ability to charge a fixed price or ask for a donation on this paywall (a paywall is an area that requires payment to access such as a Group, Page or Site membership).
Setting a Fixed Price: The first screen I encounter when I set up any paywall is the Membership Length and Cost screen. Once there, I get two options: to set a fixed price for the group or ask for a donation. Here is what the fixed price screen looks like:
And here is what this page looks like when I want to ask my members for a donation to join this group:
Notice how I set the suggested amount to $79.95, and the minimum and maximum values at $0 and $99.95 respectively. I suppose it would be wise of me to point out that there is the potential to charge $0. This means donation is optional, and that anyone can join without paying. We think this will be a valuable feature for many, but again, the option is yours, and by simply setting the minimum to a higher value, payment will be required.
Thanks for following along! I hope this post has sparked your creative juices and piqued your excitement. Now it’s time for the details…
How much does Paid Access cost?
Paid Access is our first add-on feature, giving customers on any Ning plan (Mini, Plus or Pro) the option to activate it for $19.95 per month. We are leveraging PayPal to process payments, so PayPal’s standard 2.9% + $0.3 service fee per transaction will also apply. These fees are all-inclusive, as we will be paying the PayPal service fee on your behalf (note: pricing for non-US customers differ slightly).
When can I start using Paid Access?
Starting on June 30, we will be rolling out Paid Access to a limited number of folks to gather feedback before making it available to all Creators in mid July. Sign up now if you want to be among the first to use this powerful feature. The first 20 Creators selected will get Paid Access free for their first month, as well as dedicated support from the Ning Team to get up and running.

Clients pay for email marketing campaigns, product reviews and banners for 90 days. So they are quarterly deals. Most clients pay for four campaigns a year, two product reviews and banners for a year... that is approximately $3000.
All the work to get this done is by volunteers from the network and people that are willing to do stuff for free microphones and toys I get from the clients. I barter for man power, sometimes do pay my team, but its rarely... I dont make enough to be spending back into staff members... but I do pay out the nose for web design and development from time to time.
Also, we have a forum, www.thevocaliststudioforum.com which is just very basic... but its the most active service we have, far greater then the ning social media system... if you dont have a forum that creates discussions and chatter, your missing a HUGE component that builds community and gets people coming back. you MUST have a forum and message board...its old school, but its still the most powerful community builder.
feel free to send me private emails... beyond that.
Thank you! I'm going to digest this over the weekend so that I have coherent questions, and will contact you next week. I truly appreciate your help.
Robert should charge for a course in this stuff. ;-)
I know your kidding but seriously, you might be right... I have kinda figured out a business model that works... there is more to it as well... I have "penn'd" the following, "The Four Pillars of Social Media Success":
Of course, this all assumes that you have chosen a compelling niche market to service.
Anyone that might be interested in learning more about how we do this, feel free to send me an email... my schedule is out of control as this is just a side business for me, my main bread & butter is www.TheVocalistStudio.com , but would be willing to do some training if anyone wants to really get serious... I think we could probably just do a complete run-down of all my systems, solutions, services and processes in about 1-2 hours over skype.
Hope this helps...
will there be a donation button found in their profiles or donation button is just visible upon sign up?
Hey, Rodelio! It's located directly in the sign-up/sign-flow. So, in that sense, it's a "paywall" but you can set the donation to a suggested amount (even $0 if you prefer).
Just to understand, if you set it up as a donation can they go around it by just closing the box or do they have to make a payment even 0.00 to get access? this is just in reference to the Donation feature. thank you for your information.
When they select $0, and click Purchase, they skip the checkout process and go directly through the signup process, and if they are already signed up, they will bypass that as well.
and im not seeing it even though ive activated it already and published it. so that means, ill be charge if i'll deactivate it?
How did you manage to activate and purchase this when it has not been released?
i dont know.. it's there and charging me $19 bux to activate.. so i tested but im not seeing anything.. i already created to fake profiles still im not seeing any changes...
