For many purposes, I can appreciate how Ning encourages the use of "friends" in it's design.
However we often encounter circumstances where we want to invite members of our network to various "groups" or otherwise interact with members who are not already our "friends". For instance: the board would like to have discussions in their group forum, but all members of the board need to join the group first. Since members are elected, we may not all already be "friends" or interested in being "friends"
I would very much like to see a feature that allowed you to toggle off the "friends" selection and invite people to your group from the full list of members. As it is, we are doing this by directly e-mailing people, which is inelegant at best.
Hey, Shannon. Nothing has changed, and it definitely isn't related to the Design Studio. However... if your NC has turned off the ability to invite people to the site, you won't see that option. It appears your site doesn't have this turned on. You might want to check with the NC.
This turned out to be a user error on my part. What has changed since the last time I invited people to groups is the addition of all the little mail import icons (gmail, yahoo mail, etc.) at the bottom of the invitation page. I had clicked on a couple and figured they were all for specific address books. I had not clicked on the one that gave me the ability to input email addresses manually, but now I have figured that out and am good to go.
Ah, gotcha. Yes, I should have been more clear. The way things are arranged has changed. So, click on that email choice and go crazy with the emails!
