I recently read a comment in a discussion that serves as a petition for new media players that concerned me. According to one of the participating network creators, Ning informed him there is "no market for entertainment and will be a miracle right now to get better players". If this is what was said, it is an unfortunate statement for two reasons:

1) It it is short-sighted and illustrates lack of vision.

2) ReverbNation

Don't you think that if we had better music players, we might attract more artists to our networks? Isn't it possible more artists would likely start their own Ning social communities? It is my belief that more artists would be willing to forgo sites like ReverbNation and SoundCloud  if we had better music players. Here's what I think would make all the difference in the world not only for network creators who run entertainment sites, but would (in my view) attract more members to our networks and more individuals looking to build their own social communities on Ning.

1) Better theming options, separate from other Ning media players. All Ning media players need a facelift overall, something more streamlined instead of clunky, which is how it looks now. I like what Google has done with their video players, very modern!

2) The 5 star rating should be more prominent, and the artists on my site are notified of the ratings.

3) Notification to my artists as to who rated their songs and added their tracks to their profile pages.

4) I'd like for the home page player to be linked with the music players on other profiles, so that I can feature my artists on a monthly basis.

5) The embed is good, but I'd like to be able to link to our players. Sites like Facebook won't accept embedding, and though you can use a work around to link to the player, but it would be a pain to my members, and all you get is an ugly link on Facebook, rather than a thumbnail image like ReverbNation players offer.

6) Download capability. Many of my artists offer free downloads, and I would love for them to be able to decide whether or not members who are fans can download their music.

7) Ideally, I would love for there to be a music page. We used to be able to do that using the Apps.IO jukebox, but sadly, those days are gone.

I realize Ning can't possibly fulfill every wish that pops up in these forums, but it would seem to me this is something that could greatly benefit Ning as a whole in addition to its network creators.

Who said this? No one from Ning said such a thing. Sounds like hearsay to me.

It seems like this guy said this, and he doesn't even appear to have a network listed on his Creators profile.

Honestly, why would we ever say something like that?

That's the gentleman, yes. Not a customer? LOL Maybe he's exploring options, I don't know.

Doesn't make sense come to think of it, Eric. Saw the post and wanted to jump in and say something quick before I lose my internet signal again.

What's Ning's position on this matter anyway?

These are great ideas you have, but that a revamp of our media players isn't currently on our roadmap. I'd love to see a re-do of a lot of things (music and video, for example), but some things have priority over others.

Patrick here is the email here i got Feb 7 4:34pm:

I don't foresee a music marketplace. I know that sounds super awesome, but that is a whole 'bother ball of wax.

Hey Patrick did you see the email I got from NIng that i found? I'm kind of disappointed at Ning or whoever think I'm lying. Why would I lie and make stuff up. I'm a retired Multi-Platinum Producer who produced Tupac Shakur, Ghostface, Wutang and others. I'm the owner and creator of The Producers Beat Auction and my members want better media players as well. So, I went and found the email and yes I'm a creator and real dude. Maybe one day they would put it on the road map.  PS You can google me "choo the specializt"

Thanks Damion! We trying to make it very interactive for everyone.

Hey Eric yes im a creator and only telling what i got in my inbox from you guys no big deal...I just don't want you guys here think Im talking hearsay etc:

GOOD ONE ERIC - LOL

Yes x 7!

All great ideas, TX and so valuable.

"Clunky" is a very good word to describe the current player. "Embarrassing" is another good description.

Does anybody have any alternative options? Are there third party players outside of NING? Not real familiar with the new API system, but would that even allow us to use a third party?

I'm just about at the stage where a new media player will be required. Going to need some advice here.

Damion and Jord...ideas? TX...I'm counting on you!

-Sylvia

I've contacted Apps.io via email in regards to what a custom music app would cost to develop, awaiting a response.  Haven't really found a good integrated third-party solution as of yet. :/

It's not going to happen, Jords. If they could have done it, it would have been done. I know quite a few competent, reputable developers who have said they would never consider developing apps for Ning for a number of reasons. It is also my opinion that Ning was determined to put the kibosh on Scripts4Ning/SiteSuites. There seems to me to be an atmosphere of hostility toward innovation and revolutionary concepts here (I would dare say the same of most corporations in the U.S. these days). Whatever happened to being light years ahead of the competition? The sole reason SocialGo has yet to reach Ning's status in the game is because Ning had a head start.

"It is not enough for me to win. My enemies must lose."
~David Merrick

That is my philosophy. Why wait for the next man to develop something while I scramble to top it? This wait and see what network creators are clamoring for "strategy" is wrong-headed, to say the very least. Business ought to be run not just by skilled individuals, but by visionaries and risk takers. Had I the funding and resources, I could put any company I chose to compete with out of business. That's not a boast, that's a fact. From ten to thirteen years of age, I used to correspond with engineers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, with my ideas for propulsion units that could propel spaceships beyond our solar system. Naturally, all my theories were shot down, but I remember impressing them with a concept for an engine that would perpetually generate the fuel it needed to operate indefinitely. When we enter into adulthood, most times we abandoned the child-like wonder we once possessed. This is the problem with America (and possibly the world) today. No longer do we think "what if?", we fret to much over how much it's going to cost, how much do we stand to make.

I like Ning a lot. From the CEO to network creator. But when it comes to business, it's not about who I like or do not. This issue of the music player truly has the potential to push Ning beyond its competitors, not merely for the reasons I or anyone else have stated here. I'll wait and see if someone up top figures it out, I'm not saying any more (wink).

You know how on Star Trek, the U.S.S. Enterprise would be engaged in some dire scenario, and Scotty would say "Captain, I can't get the engines back online for at least four hours!". Then Kirk would look at him and say "Scotty, you've got two". True to form, Scotty would sort it out in 45 minutes. I think we could use a Scotty or three.
