I am interested in putting a wall similar to twitter (140 characters) but NOT twitter on the front page of my site.  I want all members to be able to write on it.  Also, I then want to be able to search the wall as well as  feed to twitter...  Is there any apps out there like this or does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

julie

Google Friend Connect and Google Wave are two things you should look into:) However, at the moment, Google Wave is having issues being embedded so perhaps FC is better until we can get Wave fixed:)
Hey Julie!

You can essentially do this already, by just using the Status field on your profile page. Those updates can appear on Twitter and will appear in your Ning Network's latest activity module on your Main Page.

We should make it even easier, by adding a wall-type thing to the Main Page, and I'll make sure we look at doing that in the future!

I think she wanted to post directly from the home page... not the profiles? .. I think ?

Maybe something like a Tweetboard could help you ?
The tweetboard concept is exactly what i want except not twitter... If I could just have my members converse with each other and then feed it to twitter... the reasoning is that I will want them to join my network and agree to tos before they post anything on the wall... with a tweetboard they would only need to sign into their twitter account... I hope that makes sense....
Thanks everyone!!!

Janettee I will check those out thanks for the tips!

Robert, yes you are right I want a wall on the home page. Basically the whole middle column will be a wall with a stream of member comments. Evan, I hope you guys get this soon as it would make my world PERFECT! ; )

Until then I will look for any apps or widgets that I can embed on the site!
I guess I should clarify, Friend Connect can be embedded in a text box, becoming a "wall"... But I don't think it is searchable. Wave would be searchable, but when embedded it shows up below the footer. Until we can get someone to help us fix THAT issue, I don't think anyone will be embedding it on Ning.
I am watching the wave hour and a half video right now... cool stuff.... and although embedding below the footer is somewhat impressive ; ) probably not going to work...

I'll check out friend connect next....
Get a witget from twitter and paste in your home page, release the twitter app in your network and that's it.
