On my network, I've installed the new chat and because of that... many members told me the website was VERY slow. :-(
On my computer, it was very fast... but I was wondering if the problem was for only a few or really a lot of people... So I did a poll to all of my members !
I was ver surprised but... 45% of my member thought the site was slow or very slow !!! :-(
Here is the complete result of this poll (355 answers) : http://bougex.wufoo.com/reports/vitesse-de-bougex-total/
Slow answer (70/355) : http://bougex.wufoo.com/reports/vitesse-de-bougex-lente/
Very slow answer (89/355) : http://bougex.wufoo.com/reports/vitesse-de-bougex-tras-lente/
So, since my poll on march 1st... We don't have any more chat on our network : http://Qc.Bougex.com
My suggestion : Having the chat on one page only, but not on the botom right of ALL the pages. Hope one day, this option will be available.
Poll Translation :
normal = normal
très rapide = very fast
Rapide = fast
Lente= slow
Très lente = Very slow
Navigateur = Browser
ou plus = or more
ou moins = or less
Age de votre ordinateur = How old is your computer

Permalink Reply by Eric Suesz on March 19, 2012 at 2:09pm Hey, Alex! I guess one of the difficulties of taking a poll is that it probably won't measure actual data. Rather, it measures perception. Did you ask them which browser they are using?
Permalink Reply by Alex from Bougex.com on March 19, 2012 at 4:31pm I 100% agree. It's a perception that I measure through this poll.
But a perception is what visitors take into consideration to come back or not on our web site.
Of course I've asked them what browser they use, what OS and how old is their computer.
You can see the results in the links I give.
355 results might be a study to take into consideration.... :-(
I can ask couple people to update their browser, their OS... but I cannot ask 45% of my members to update everything... :-(
You should show the result of this poll to your team... and maybe target few networks and ask creators to do the same poll. Not techies networks of course... ;-)
Thanks !
Alex
Permalink Reply by Eric Suesz on March 20, 2012 at 10:56am Oh, great! You have the browser type in there. That's very, very helpful. Thank you.
I fear that Internet Explorer is the culprit, which is often the case. I definitely don't recommend Compatibility Mode when using IE. I am guessing that may be the issue here.
Permalink Reply by Alex from Bougex.com on March 20, 2012 at 1:44pm I agree most of the users don't do updates of their Os and Browsers..... Specialy when you deal with an outdoor comunity like us ! ;-)
As a conclusion, i would say that this chat is made for techies communities... like us, the NC who have updated browsers, softwares, computers.... But for everyday people with old browsers, it doesn't make sence to show them this chat. It's to heavy on computer ressources for them.
I would suggest to have a chat page where people can chat... but not a chat on EVERY pages.
Unfortunately, it's not possible yet... :-(
Hope one day, we will be able to embed a chat in a page but not all pages.
I could use a third party chat to do that.... but unfortunatly, it's not integrated with our members. So they have to register again. And because our members are not techies... They hate to register again with an other platform like Facebook... :-(
Maybe in one or two years, only 15-20% of our members will think the web site is slow, and then will be able to implement the chat again.
Thanks !
Alex
I had members complaining that response time was so slow they gave up posting. When I removed CHAT, the problem fixed itself immediately.
Permalink Reply by Eric Suesz on March 20, 2012 at 1:27pm Thanks for that info, Lorelei. I would wager that the problem at its root was because people are using IE's Compatibility Mode.
