I have recently run into a problem. Until now, I have had 4 admins to work as moderators all over the site. This allowed them to do everything that I could do, which was worked for us until now. All was fine, until we got our first private group, which now all 4 admins can now look in at. I promised this group that I would be the only person who could do this and that I wouldn't unless deemed necessary. So my dilemma is how do I either get to limit the power of my admins or increase the power of moderators? Right now, all they can do as moderators is moderate the forum, and not the activity board or any of the elements on my front page. I hope I have explained myself well.
I have this same situation.
I have one trusted admin who has access if she decides to use it, but I have not yet added others for the same reason you explain.
The private groups I use are for members who pay for that privacy.
Feeling your "Help" right now!
Perrie, take a look at Administrative Roles (My Network > Members > Management > Administrative Roles (tab). I haven't implemented them, only played with them and expect to use them. It's my understanding you can create an Administrative Role that allows you admins to only manage the Forum (or whatever else you choose to provide them access to). You could give them access to everything but Groups.
What I have found is that they have their limitations. Right now my admins can do any function I can. But when I did what you suggested 2 days ago, I found out that they can't delete comments from the "Latest Activity" or even change our AP picture that we carry on our front page. They also can't accept a pending member. My site is very busy, and having these additional helping hands took a load off of me.
I haven't implemented it myself, but I did notice it was limited. I'm thinking on my new network before I recruit admins, I'll get a very clear understanding of what those limitations are, and recruit to them.
