My Network was successfully spammed after 4 years... a few thoughts

I woke up this morning to 15 emails about health care coming from  a "Pam Wentworth"

I sent in a ticket so Ning knows, and it made me think.... could we get some sort of alert when a member joins more than 3 groups in a day and/or if a member tries to send an email to various groups at the same time it doesn't allow them (say more than 2)?  

That way we can check in and make sure it's not a spammer.  My network has 7,000 members and it's pretty embarrassing that this happened.

Also didn't know that any member can send a message to an ENTIRE group even if they didn't create the group.  I must be wrong, but that probably should be a no-no.  

 

My users are discussing it too.

One of the first things I did was turn off the "Send message to group" feature on ALL groups.  This is a perfect feature for internal spammers or disgruntled members.

Go to each group, click "Options" and then "Edit Group".  Look down to where it says "Allow members to send message to the entire group".  UNCHECK THAT BOX.  That will prevent INTERNAL spamming.  And don't worry, the creator of the group still retains the ability to send out messages to the entire group even if that box is unchecked.
