Dear Ning,
This is what I think our new media players should look like. The features are pretty self explanatory, but just in case they are
not, allow me to clarify and tell you about the features of the all new NING media players.
The new media player will allow users to share individual songs on facebook, twitter and in an email.
The RSS feed will give users the ability to follow the media player for updated content.
Users will have the ability to like or dislike media content.
Users will also have the ability to flag inappropriate content posted on the site.
Inappropriate content : Adult, Abusive or Copyright Infringing Content.
It is the responsibility of each network creator to monitor the
content of their site to insure that there is no copyright infringing material being
posted and downloaded by their members.
NING IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR SITES THAT VIOLATE COPYRIGHT LAW.
Video & Music Linking. Users will be able to link videos to songs for quick access.
The Download feature will be configured by the uploading party or by the network creator.
If the network creator allows downloading, the uploading party will be able to make the song or video
available for free download or for sale. If the song or video is listed for sale the uploading party must
have a verified paypal account. This will help to verify the uploading party's identity
and also limit copyright infringement.
Who can upload media content? This is something that also needs to be set by the network creator.
Not having this ability makes it hard to create "membership levels" on sites that charge a membership fee.
People want to be rewarded, they want their content to be seen/heard, give network creators
the ability to determine who can upload media and who can not.
Who can download media? The network creator should also be able to determine who can download content.
Members, visitors or paying members.
The plus button that you see on the player gives users the ability to create playlists.
Thanks for your time I hope you all enjoyed my thoughts and I'd love to hear your feedback.

Permalink Reply by Patrick Chappelle on July 15, 2012 at 10:48pm I have the honor of having the longest discussion about reworking our music and video players ever on Creators. Been making noise about it for years, and I gave details of how it should work, and how it would not only benefit network creators, but Ning as a whole. Obviously the heads upstairs aren't interested. As ugly as it is now, I'm more concerned with functionality rather than aesthetics. But I would settle for a new look, seeing as my other requests seem beyond Ning.
Your ideas for a player are nice, but not enough.
I've criticized Ning for not making it so that we can distinguish our networks from one another enough. But after playing around with things on my network in recent months, I realize that it is possible to remove the "Ning-ness" from our networks without having to be a coding expert. Sometime this week, I'll have done it. But we need to be able to have the same customization options for our music and video players like we have in the Design Studio. I don't just want to change the colors of my music and video players, I want to be able to skin it. Even once I've completed my customization, one look at the music and video players, and an observer will realize I run a Ning network. The changes they made for our chat are nice, but I'd like to be able to do more with that too. Thanks to Jen, I can at least give it more customization than Ning permits. Now if only we could change the bar itself. But I digress.
As I mentioned in my other posts, it would be great if sites like mine who run music communities could have better features. We can rate songs, but my artists have no idea who rated their songs. There's also no way for me to add their songs to the main player, and no way for anyone to download the songs. If it's copyright infringement Ning is worried about, they should make it so we can monitor what's being uploaded. My bands are either unsigned or underground Metal bands, and they don't have a problem with fans sharing their music. For them it's free promotion. But I have had members who upload commercial Metal bands, and I don't allow it. However, it is impossible for me to check everyone's page to see what they've uploaded.
I like what you've got here, though. The RSS, and share options are a great idea, and your ranking system is preferable to the one we've got now where the stars are almost imperceptible.
Ugh! I was supposed to be in bed, but I had to stop and respond to this. Thanks for throwing in your two cents into the push for new media players (oh yeah, the photo slide show needs a reboot too, but I'm done for the night).
Permalink Reply by Jay Ferrari on July 16, 2012 at 10:20am I agree with you and always have in regards the media players. The purpose of this post was simply to say "hey step it up a bit". They know that they need to upgrade the look and feel of the players but I don't think that will happen until they release a new design for ning in general.
I gave up on my music site a long time ago because I couldn't offer any real music networking features to my members. I now run a group/blog based fantasy football network (well I am in the process of launching it. Anyways I hope they at least glance at this post and make a decision to add it to the road map or to at least explain why they haven't given us any new media features.
