For a long time, Ning network creators have been begging for the ability to edit members profiles. I have been one of those who not only thought it useless, but unwise. I have since had a change of heart, starting this very minute. LOL
Being a social network that's opened to Metal bands from all over the world, not all of my members are versed in English. Even the ones who are, don't spell very well at all. My blogs are moderated, I've removed my forum, and I can always edit video and photo information. The one thing I can not do is edit my members profile page. I don't mean the layout and design, I mean the basic information. A band from India just joined, and his (their?) profile info is not well organized. I would love nothing more than to go in there and edit his page.
So, yes, I surrender! I will admit we do need this capability.
Thanks for listening to my rant.
Permalink Reply by Janettee McCrary on June 30, 2012 at 7:42pm I would love the ability to edit their answers to questions... I have set up questions that can be found through search - and a lot of people are answering this question incorrectly - thus ending up in the wrong search!

Permalink Reply by Patrick Chappelle on July 1, 2012 at 3:25pm That's just what happened with the aforementioned band at my site, Janettee. They signed up under "Fan" rather than "Recording Artist". Ugh!
Permalink Reply by Jeff on July 1, 2012 at 2:34am Personally, a members profile is just that, bad English and all. However, if a member wanted help on their page then I think we should be able to edit it. Maybe a method where the member can assign temporary permission.
I have had times where a member passed away and being able to add a suitable note to their page would have been great. Maybe this could be an administrator note that is an addition on their profile.
The other need is when they can't login for some reason. Being able to reset email address and password would be good.
Permalink Reply by Ed on July 1, 2012 at 4:07am ah, good point Jeff. I take back my slippery slope argument. I'm all for it.
In fact, it would be a great idea to have a member-activated style, where NCs can access profiles but only if the member has opted into it.

Permalink Reply by Patrick Chappelle on July 1, 2012 at 3:26pm My admin passed away last year, and I was thinking the same as you, Jeff.
Slippery slope Patrick, a road to a benign dictatorship ;-), one day you are correcting spelling errors the next day you are correcting guitar solos!

Permalink Reply by Patrick Chappelle on July 1, 2012 at 3:29pm Hmm. I can actually recycle my earlier response to Jeff. LOL
"Not at all. I would leave it at fixing grammatical errors. I barely have the time it manage my network now, I couldn't imagine having to agonize over every minute detail."
Actually I know what you mean, I have on occasion when reading someone else's blog post changed spelling mistakes. However, knowing how my 20 year old niece and their friends spell I couldn't second guess what was deliberate nu spelling n wat waz de old wa.
