SEO BASICS, can someone help me?

Myself and my partners are getting close to launching our first site. This has been a learning expeirence to say the least... Can someone offer some basic suggestions for preparing my site for search engines and steps i should take? i have read thru the help center articles and im still a lil unsure. Everyone here seems very knowledgable, so i thought id see what my options are from the pros... Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

well i have a million questions,,,, i guess ill start with, do i need activity before optimizing SEO,,,,what can i do pre-launch..? how about an order of events, what should i do first? second?.....im not even sure what questions to ask... i am no computer expert,but i learn fast.
